Chapter 5 - VANESSA’S MASK

In Suite 804 on the eighth floor, the morning light filtered through heavy silk drapes, illuminating a room that looked more like a five-star hotel than a medical unit.
A silver tray of untouched croissants, fresh strawberries, and imported herbal tea sat on the low mahogany coffee table. Beside the king-sized adjustable bed, an antique-style bassinet was draped in Belgian lace—all provided under the elite maternity package Eleanor Bennett had arranged six months ago.
Vanessa Sinclair lay back against a mountain of goose-down pillows, wearing a pale blush silk robe that accentuated her delicate, pale collarbones. Her dark hair fell in artfully disheveled waves around her face. She looked fragile, ethereal, like an 18th-century painting of a tragic heroine.
Except for her eyes.
Her eyes were fixed on the screen of her iPhone, scrolling through the banking app with frantic, twitching thumb movements.
*Transfer Failed: Account Frozen by Court Order.*
*Card Declined: Merchant Service Inactive.*
*Available Balance: $412.18.*
Vanessa let out a sharp, ragged hiss through her teeth. She tossed the phone onto the silk duvet cover, her chest heaving beneath the robe.
The door to the suite opened.
Ryan slipped inside. He looked horrific. His eyes were bloodshot, his jaw shadowed with dark, uneven stubble, and his sweater was wrinkled and stained with coffee. The polished, effortless charm of the Manhattan architect had completely unraveled, leaving behind a hollow, frantic shell.
“Ryan!” Vanessa cried out instantly, her voice shifting with theatrical perfection from cold rage to pitiful, trembling relief. She stretched her slender arms toward him. “Where were you? I’ve been so terrified! The hospital billing department sent a woman in here thirty minutes ago with a clipboard, asking me for a primary credit card to secure the room! She said the payment authorization was revoked!”
Ryan collapsed onto the sofa, dropping his head into his hands. His shoulders shook.
“It’s over, Ness,” Ryan choked out, his voice muffled by his palms. “It’s all gone.”
Vanessa went completely still beneath the sheets. Her arms lowered slowly. The trembling in her lower lip vanished.
“What do you mean, it’s all gone?” she asked. The honeyed sweetness was gone from her voice, replaced by a flat, metallic chill.
Ryan looked up, his face pale, his eyes wide and unfocused. “Claire found out. She found out about the money. She found out about the Tribeca lease. She had an forensic auditor tracking our joint accounts for two months.”
Vanessa’s eyes widened, not with guilt, but with calculating shock. “How? You told me you managed that account! You told me she never looked at the statements!”
“Her family owns half the private banks in this city, Vanessa!” Ryan yelled, his voice cracking before he caught himself and dropped to a whisper. “Her father’s lawyer, Arthur Vance, filed for divorce last night. They froze the accounts. They froze the firm’s operating credit line! Chase is demanding repayment of the $150,000 loan by tomorrow afternoon!”
Vanessa sat up straight in bed, completely forgetting the “excruciating” abdominal pain that had prevented her from walking ten hours earlier.
“What about my rent?” she demanded, her voice sharp as an icepick. “The lease on Tribeca is due on the first! That’s eighteen thousand dollars for the quarter! And my nanny—I have a night nurse scheduled to start on Friday!”
Ryan stared at her, blinking as if he were seeing her in full daylight for the first time.
“Your rent?” Ryan asked, his voice hollow. “Vanessa, I just told you my firm is about to collapse! I have an emergency restraining order barring me from my own home! My daughter was born four hours ago via an emergency C-section while I was sitting in this room with you, and Claire won't even let me see her!”
Vanessa let out an impatient, irritated breath, tossing her hair over her shoulder.
“Ryan, of course she’s doing that. She’s Eleanor Bennett’s daughter. They are trust-fund snobs who use money to punish people. But you are her husband! You have legal rights! Go down there, make a scene, call the press! If the media finds out Marcus Bennett is using security guards to bar a father from his newborn child, they’ll settle in five minutes!”
“I did go down there!” Ryan shouted, rising from the sofa, pacing the length of the private suite. “I brought Finch with me! Do you know what happened?”
Vanessa narrowed her eyes. “What?”
“Arthur Vance met us in the lobby with Marcus Bennett and three senior partners from his firm,” Ryan said, his hands trembling violently. “Finch took one look at the paperwork Vance handed him—the forged transfer forms with Claire’s initials, the audio recording from Nurse Rachel, the loan default notices—and Finch literally packed his briefcase and walked out! He told me he wouldn't represent me for a million dollars! He told me I was looking at grand larceny charges if the Bennett family decides to press criminal referral with the Manhattan District Attorney!”
Vanessa’s face drained of every drop of color.
“Criminal charges?” she whispered. Her fingers caught the silk sheets, twisting them tight. “Ryan... they can’t involve me in that. I didn’t know where the money came from! You told me it was your personal bonus from the architectural firm!”
Ryan stopped pacing. He turned slowly, staring at Vanessa as if she had struck him across the face with a heavy stone.
“What did you just say?”
Vanessa looked away, her jaw tightening. “I am a widow, Ryan. I have an infant son to protect. If you committed fraud to pay for my apartment, that is between you and your wife’s family. I cannot have my name dragged through the tabloids. My late husband’s family is already challenging Julian’s estate in London probate. If they find out I was involved in some sordid embezzlement scheme in New York, they will strip my son’s trust fund completely!”
“A sordid embezzlement scheme?” Ryan took a step toward the bed, his voice trembling with disbelief. “I did this for *you*! You called me crying every single night! You told me you couldn't survive in that small apartment in Queens! You told me Julian’s death left you with nothing! You begged me to find a way to get you into this suite because your doctor said your pelvic recovery would be difficult!”
“I asked for help, Ryan!” Vanessa snapped, her face twisting into an ugly, bitter sneer that completely destroyed the delicate illusion she had maintained for ten months. “I didn't tell you to forge your wife’s signature! I didn't tell you to use an account her family controls! You told me you were a wealthy, independent partner in an elite firm! You told me you had hundreds of thousands of dollars in private investments!”
She let out a cruel, mocking laugh.
“You’re nothing, Ryan. You’re just a kept man living off a Bennett trust fund. And the second your wife cut the leash, you turned into a beggar.”
Ryan stood frozen in the middle of the luxurious room.
The room Eleanor Bennett had paid for. The room Claire should have been resting in.
Every word Vanessa spoke landed like an iron hammer against his skull, shattering the delusional narrative he had built around himself. He had thought he was a knight in shining armor, rescuing a tragic, beautiful woman from the cruel world. He had convinced himself that Claire was cold, demanding, and privileged, while Vanessa was soft, appreciative, and helpless.
Now, looking at the sharp, calculating glare in Vanessa’s eyes, he saw the reality with horrifying, absolute clarity.
Vanessa had never loved him. She hadn't even cared about him. She had used his lingering, pathetic high-school nostalgia as an open checkbook to fund her luxury lifestyle while her husband’s estate was tied up in British courts. She had played him like a cheap instrument.
And to keep this parasite satisfied, Ryan had abandoned the woman who had truly loved him. He had walked away from his own daughter while her heart was failing in an operating room.
“Get out,” Vanessa said coldly, picking up her phone again.
Ryan blinked. “What?”
“Get out of my room, Ryan. I have to call my estate lawyer in London and see if I can wire funds from my mother’s account before this hospital throws me into the public ward. You can’t help me anymore. You’re radioactive.”
She didn't even look at him as she began dialing.
Ryan stepped backward toward the door. The suite—the vast, elegant suite with its silk drapes and Belgian lace—felt suddenly like a tomb.
May you like
He stumbled out into the eighth-floor hallway, the heavy door clicking shut behind him, leaving him completely alone in the sterile, indifferent corridor of St. Catherine’s Medical Center.
