My husband drove our car straight into the river with my brother and me trapped inside

. By the time the water had risen to my neck, the man who had supposedly been “paralyzed” for 15 years suddenly stood up from his wheelchair, k:ick:ed the door open, and whispered, “Play d:ea:d. He’s watching.”

I didn’t ask a single question… until I saw who was standing on the shore, waiting for my husband.

PART 1

“Don’t bother trying to open the door, Rosalind. It’s already too late for you.”

Those were the last words I heard from my husband before I watched him climb through the car window and leave us behind in the middle of the river.

Everything happened in a matter of seconds.

Garrett had been driving along the coastal road toward Savannah Creek. My brother, Tobias, was sitting in the back in the wheelchair he had used ever since the accident that killed our parents fifteen years ago.

Then, suddenly, Garrett lost control of the SUV.

At least, that was what I thought.

The vehicle smashed through the barrier and plunged into the river.

The impact left me disoriented. When I finally came to my senses, water was already rising around my ankles.

“Garrett! I can’t open the door!”

He said nothing.

Instead, I watched him calmly unfasten his seat belt, roll down the window, and swim out of the SUV.

“Tobias is still in the back!” I screamed.

Garrett didn’t even look back.

I desperately tried to release my own seat belt.

The buckle wouldn’t move.

I reached beneath the seat, searching for anything that might help, and my fingers touched something metallic.

A wire.

Someone had tied my seat belt directly to the frame.

That was the moment I understood.

This had never been an accident.

The water rose to my chest.

Through the window, I could see Garrett reaching the shore.

But someone was waiting for him.

A woman stood beneath an umbrella.

Penelope.

My half sister.

And she was pregnant.

I watched Garrett wrap his arms around her. Penelope touched his face, and together they turned toward the river, watching as the SUV slowly sank beneath the surface.

My husband was smiling.

Three years of marriage.

Three years of hearing him tell me that I was the love of his life.

Every night, he prepared warm milk for me because, according to him, I worked too hard managing part of the shipyard my family had founded in Baltimore.

And now that same man was standing safely on shore, calmly watching me die.

“Rosalind…”

Tobias’s voice came from behind me.

I turned around, tears streaming down my face.

The water had almost reached his mouth.

For fifteen years, my brother had been unable to move his legs.

“I’m sorry,” I whispered. “I’m the one who brought this man into our family.”

I closed my eyes.

Then I heard a heavy blow behind me.

And another.

My eyes flew open.

Tobias wasn’t sitting in his wheelchair anymore.

He was standing.

Standing inside the SUV.

On both legs.

He pulled a small cutting tool from beneath his jacket and quickly sliced through the wire securing my seat belt.

I stared at him in shock.

“Your legs…?”

“I’ll explain later.”

As the pressure inside and outside the vehicle began to equalize, Tobias k:icke:d the rear door with all his strength.

It opened.

He grabbed me and pulled me out.

I immediately tried to swim toward the surface.

But Tobias stopped me.

“No.”

“We’re going to drown!”

He pushed a small emergency breathing mouthpiece into my hand. He had kept it hidden inside a waterproof pouch.

“Garrett is watching from the shore,” Tobias said. “If he realizes you survived, he’ll try to kill you again.”

We stayed underwater and swam beneath an old pier until we reached a narrow maintenance gap between two enormous concrete pillars, completely hidden from anyone watching from the road.

The moment I could finally breathe properly, I shoved Tobias against the wall.

“Fifteen years! You’ve spent fifteen years pretending you couldn’t walk!”

He didn’t argue.

He didn’t try to defend himself.

He simply looked at me and said:

“Because Mom and Dad’s accident wasn’t an accident either.”

It felt as though the entire world had collapsed around me for a second time.

“What are you talking about?”

Tobias stared directly into my eyes.

“Garrett’s family has been trying to take control of the shipyard for fifteen years. He never married you because he loved you.”

Then he said something that made me feel colder than the river ever could.

“Today, Garrett wasn’t only trying to kill you because of what you own. He was finishing the job his father started with Mom and Dad.”

That night, I realized my entire marriage might have been built on a lie.

But there was still something I didn’t know.

The worst part wasn’t that Garrett had tried to drown me.

The worst part was discovering what he had secretly been putting into my body for the past three years.
