Chapter 8 - The House of Cards Collapses

"Chloe, listen to me—it’s a legal maneuver!" Derek shouted, grabbing her arm. "Audrey’s lawyers are just playing hardball to gain leverage for the settlement! I’m the head of Halston Capital! I control millions!"

"You controlled millions, Derek," Arthur Pendelton interrupted, his voice cutting through Derek’s desperate lies like a guillotine. "Past tense."

Arthur reached into his coat pocket and withdrew a second document, holding it against the bars for Derek to see.

"As of nine-fifteen this morning, you have been terminated as Managing Director of Halston Capital. The Vance Trust has exercised its majority shareholder rights to initiate a full forensic audit of all accounts dating back thirty-six months. Any personal expenditures charged to corporate lines—including, I believe, several luxury hotel suites in Arlington and a rather exorbitant receipt from Cartier earlier this afternoon—will be referred directly to the Commonwealth’s Attorney for criminal investigation."

Derek’s knees buckled.

He grabbed the iron bars of the gate to keep himself upright. The world seemed to tilt on its axis. The sky, the trees, the brick pillars—everything blurred into a sickening vortex of ruin.

"Arthur... please," Derek choked out, the arrogant baritone completely gone, replaced by the pathetic whimper of a broken child. "You can't do this. My mother is in that house. She’s seventy years old. You can't put my mother on the street!"

As if on cue, the front door of the mansion swung open at the top of the driveway.

Evelyn Halston appeared on the portico.

She was not wearing her tailored knit dress. She was wearing a simple coat, clutching her designer leather handbag to her chest like a shield. Flanking her were two Henrico County Sheriff’s deputies and a female officer carrying three large, industrial black plastic contractor bags.

"Derek!" Evelyn’s voice shrieked down the three-hundred-foot driveway, shrill and cracked with hysteria. "Derek, do something! These animals are putting me out! They took my jewelry box! They said it belongs to the estate!"

"Mother!" Derek screamed, rattling the iron gate frantically. "Let her out! Open this gate!"

The security guard stepped forward with a remote transponder.

The heavy iron gates hummed to life, sliding slowly open with a low, hydraulic groan.

The sheriff’s cruiser moved down the drive, stopping just inside the entrance. The deputy opened the rear door, and Evelyn stumbled out onto the gravel. Her hair was disheveled, her face pale and blotchy with tears of absolute humiliation.

The female deputy dropped the three black contractor bags onto the asphalt with a heavy, unceremonious thud.

"These are Mrs. Halston’s personal clothing and toiletries," the deputy announced in a flat, official voice. "All family heirlooms, art, silver, and furniture are documented trust property and will remain on site pending the court audit."

The deputy turned to Derek, unholstering a clipboard.

"Derek Halston?"

Derek stared at the deputy, completely numb. "Yes."

"You are formally served with a temporary restraining order issued by the Henrico County Circuit Court," the officer said, thrusting a thick legal packet into Derek’s chest. "You are forbidden from entering within five hundred feet of this property, within five hundred feet of Ms. Audrey Vance, or within five hundred feet of the minor child, Maisie Vance. Any violation will result in immediate arrest."

"Audrey Vance?" Derek whispered, his eyes wide. "Her name is Audrey Halston."

Arthur Pendelton stepped forward, adjusting his silver tie with absolute, merciless precision.

"Audrey officially petitioned the court for the restoration of her maiden name this morning, Derek. And as for your daughter—her legal name on the amended Commonwealth birth registry is Maisie Vance. You forfeited the privilege of that child bearing your name when you ignored seventeen calls while she struggled for breath."

Derek looked at his mother, who had collapsed against the hood of the Porsche, sobbing uncontrollably into her trembling hands.

He looked at Chloe Montgomery.

Chloe was already walking away.

She had pulled her phone from her purse, her thumbs flying across the screen, furiously ordering a rideshare. She didn't look back at Derek. She didn't offer a word of comfort. When Derek reached out toward her, she recoiled as if he were a leper.

"Don't touch me," Chloe spat, her face twisted in disgust. "You're a fraud. A complete, pathetic fraud."

The black town car Chloe had ordered pulled up to the curb five minutes later. She stepped inside, slammed the door, and was whisked away into the Richmond traffic, leaving the diamond tennis bracelet sitting on the hood of the Porsche where she had tossed it.

Derek stood in the gravel driveway between his sobbing mother and three black trash bags containing the entirety of their remaining worldly possessions.

Arthur Pendelton turned back toward the estate.

"The security team will remain on site twenty-four hours a day, Derek," the old lawyer said over his shoulder as the iron gates began to slide shut once more. "I suggest you take your mother to a motel. Your credit cards will cease functioning within the hour."

The gates locked with a heavy, resounding *clack*.
