Chapter 7 - The Arraignment

The DuPage County Courthouse was packed to the gills by 2:00 p.m.

Although I was still discharged from the hospital, my doctor insisted I use a wheelchair and keep my cast elevated. Claire pushed me through the crowded corridors, past flashing camera lights and reporters shouting questions about the “Suburban House of Horrors” scandal that had gripped the Midwest.

When we entered Courtroom 3B, the atmosphere was thick with tension.

Seated at the defense table were Luke and Celina, dressed in orange county jumpuits, their wrists cuffed to a steel rail beneath the desk.

Luke looked ten years older. The confident, arrogant logistics manager who had looked down at me on the kitchen floor was gone, replaced by a hollowed-out shell of a man staring blankly at the polished wood table. Beside him, Celina sat rigidly upright, her face locked in a mask of bitter, unrepentant fury. When she spotted my wheelchair rolling down the center aisle, her eyes snapped toward me with venomous hatred.

I didn't flinch. I looked her dead in the eye, my expression calm, unyielding, and completely triumphant. She quickly looked away, unable to sustain the weight of her own defeat.

The Honorable Judge Evelyn Vance—no relation to Marcus, thankfully—presided over the hearing with an air of frigid professional severity.

“We are here for the formal reading of charges and bail review in the matter of The State of Illinois versus Luke Pierce and Celina Pierce,” Judge Vance announced, her voice echoing off the high courtroom ceiling.

For the next forty-5 minutes, the prosecutor read through the chilling list of indictments: aggravated domestic battery, unlawful restraint, conspiracy to commit kidnapping, and financial fraud. Every detail—from the weight of the rolling pin to the audio transcript of their dinner conversation—was laid bare for the public record.

When the defense attorney stood up to make a pathetic plea for reduced bail, citing “family stress and a lack of prior criminal record,” Judge Vance cut him off mid-sentence.

“Counselor,” Judge Vance said, her eyes flashing with cold anger. “In my twenty years on the bench, I have rarely encountered a case of such calculated, sadistic cruelty disguised as domestic discipline. These defendants did not merely commit an act of violence; they systematically plotted to erase an innocent human being’s autonomy, safety, and fundamental rights.”

She slammed her gavel down with a sharp, resounding crack.

“Bail is formally denied. Both defendants will be remanded to the custody of the county department of corrections until trial.”

A muffled sob broke out from the back row—Barron, sitting alone in the shadows, weeping quietly into his hands as his wife and son were led away in chains.

I watched them go, feeling not a trace of pity, but a profound, beautiful sense of closure. The cage they had built for me had become their own prison.
