Chapter 4 - The Altar of Deceit

The silence in St. Jude’s was no longer merely tense; it had curdled into the absolute, terrifying quiet of an impending execution.

Special Agent Vance did not hurry. His polished oxfords struck the aisle runner with a steady, rhythmic cadence that matched the beating of a drum. Behind him, the state troopers moved to flank the side exits, their presence effectively turning the historic cathedral into an inescapable federal perimeter.

Richard Stone’s eyes darted frantically toward the vestry door behind the choir stalls, but a uniformed officer had already materialized in that archway, resting his hand casually on his duty belt.

"Richard Stone," Agent Vance said, his voice flat and authoritative as he stopped three paces from my father. "Margaret Stone. I suggest you both take a seat."

"What is the meaning of this?!" Richard boomed, though his voice lacked any shred of its usual boardroom command. His hands were shaking so violently that he had to shove them into his tuxedo pockets to hide the tremor. "Do you have any idea who I am? I sit on the Governor’s Advisory Council! I play golf with the Chief Justice of the State Supreme Court!"

"Not anymore, Mr. Stone," Agent Vance said, producing a folded white document from his breast pocket. "At eight-fifteen this morning, Judge Harris signed federal arrest warrants charging you, your wife, and your chief financial officer with forty-seven counts of wire fraud, mail fraud, money laundering, and conspiracy under the RICO Act."

A collective gasp swept through the pews again, louder and more panicked this time.

In the fourth row, Mrs. Alistair, the grand dame of the local heritage society, fanned herself rapidly with a gold-leafed program, her eyes bulging. Two city councilmen in the fifth row abruptly stood up, slid past their wives, and attempted to exit through the back, only to be politely but firmly turned back by the state troopers.

"This is a mistake!" Margaret screamed, her voice cracking into a shrill, hysterical pitch. She grabbed Richard's arm, her fingernails tearing through the fabric of his sleeve. "Richard, tell them! Tell them it's Emma! She did this! She's been jealous of Paige and Lauren her entire life! She’s fabricated everything to destroy us!"

"Be quiet, Margaret!" Richard hissed under his breath, his eyes wide and wild.

"I will not be quiet!" she shrieked, turning her furious, venomous glare toward me. "Look at her! Standing there in that pathetic dress! You ungrateful little parasite! I gave you life! I gave you a roof over your head! We took you in when we could have sent you away!"

Grandpa Arthur stepped between Margaret and me, his cane resting firmly between his feet, his jaw set like granite.

"You didn't take her in out of charity, Margaret," Arthur said, each word dripping with twenty years of accumulated contempt. "You took her in because my late wife’s trust stipulated that if Emma was not raised in this family until her twenty-fifth birthday, every single asset of the Stone estate—the houses, the portfolio, the land—would immediately revert to a blind charitable trust managed by the state."

The sanctuary went completely still.

Paige looked at her mother, her mouth hanging open. "What? Mom... what is he talking about?"

"Shut up, Paige!" Margaret snarled, not looking at her daughter.

"You kept her in the attic," Arthur continued, his voice rising, carrying over the heads of the four hundred guests who were now witnessing the utter destruction of the Stone dynasty. "You fed her scraps. You bought her clothes from clearance racks while you showered these two with stolen fortunes. You made her feel small, dirty, and unwanted, hoping she would break. Hoping she would run away before she turned eighteen so you could claim she abandoned the family and keep the money for yourselves."

"Grandpa..." Lauren whispered, tears finally spilling over her mascara, ruining the perfect, sculpted face she had spent two hours preparing. "Grandpa, please... we didn't know..."

"You didn't *care* to know, Lauren," I said, stepping past Daniel to look directly at my sisters. "You never asked where your Paris trips came from. You never asked why your college tuition was paid in full while I was scrubbing pots in the dining hall until two in the morning. You laughed when Mom called me her greatest regret. You liked that I was underneath your feet. It made you feel tall."

Paige took a step back, her face draining of color, clutching her stomach as if she were going to be sick.

Agent Vance stepped forward, signaling to the troopers. "Richard Stone. Margaret Stone. Turn around and place your hands behind your back."

"No!" Margaret shrieked, backing away into the pew. "Don't you dare touch me! Do you know what my dress cost?! Do you know who my friends are?!"

"Mrs. Stone," one of the female troopers said firmly, stepping over the broken champagne glass and catching Margaret by the forearm. "Do not resist. You are making this significantly worse for yourself."

As the steel cuffs clicked around Margaret’s wrists, the final remnants of her composure evaporated. She began to thrash, screaming obscenities that bounced off the stained-glass images of the saints, her French twist coming undone, strands of blonde hair whipping across her sweat-streaked face.

Richard did not fight. When the cuffs went around his wrists, his shoulders simply caved in. The powerful, terrifying patriarch who had ruled my childhood with icy disdain shrank into an old, broken fraud, his head bowed, unable to look a single guest in the eye.

"Emma," Richard whispered as they led him past me. "Emma, please... the family..."

May you like

"You aren't a family, Richard," I said softly, my voice barely above a whisper, yet loud enough to reach his ears. "You were a syndicate. And your accounts have just been settled."
