Chapter 2 - The Boiling Point of Entitlement

The shrill beep of the oven timer hung in the air for three agonizing seconds before Daniel stood up from his chair, pushing it back with a sharp scrape against the floor.
“Let’s just drop it,” Daniel said, his voice tight with controlled fury. He looked down at me, placing a warm, reassuring hand on my shoulder. “Em, let’s get our coats. We’re leaving right now.”
“No, we are not leaving!” Margaret shrieked, her voice cracking as she rounded the kitchen island, stepping directly into our path. Her composure had completely disintegrated, replaced by a frantic, feral desperation. “You don't walk out of my house like ungrateful children! After everything I’ve sacrificed—every bill I paid when Daniel was starting his firm, every social connection I leveraged, every sleepless night I spent organizing your lives—this is how you repay me?!”
“Mom, you didn't pay my startup bills, you loaned me money at commercial interest rates that I paid back in full three years ago!” Daniel shouted, his face flushing dark with a mixture of anger and humiliation. “Stop acting like you own us!”
“I own the legacy of this family!” Margaret screamed, slamming her palms down onto the edge of the dining table so hard the crystal water goblets rattled violently. “And that child—that little boy you’re bringing into the world—he carries the Vance name! He is an extension of us, not some mid-tier suburban teacher’s grandson!”
I felt a cold wave of nausea wash over me. I pushed my chair back and stood up, steadying myself with both hands planted firmly on the mahogany table. My pregnant belly felt heavy and tight, pressing uncomfortably against my ribs.
“Margaret, listen to yourself,” I said, my voice trembling with disgust. “He is a human being, not a trophy for your mantelpiece. He does not belong to you, and neither does Daniel.”
Margaret’s head whipped around toward me. Her eyes—bulging with a manic, unhinged fury—locked onto my stomach like a heat-seeking missile.
“You,” she whispered, her voice dropping into a venomous hiss that made the hair on my arms stand on end. “You ungrateful, manipulative parasite. You think you’ve won? You think you can sink your claws into my son and walk away? I will make sure you never see a dime of this family’s trust, and I will make sure the courts see you as the unstable, unfit mother you—”
“That is enough!” Daniel roared, stepping directly between his mother and me, pushing her back with a gentle but firm shove. “Mom, we are walking out that front door right now. Do not call us, do not visit us, and do not ever speak to my wife that way again!”
Daniel grabbed my hand, his fingers icy cold and trembling slightly. “Come on, Em. Let’s go.”
I nodded, feeling a sharp, uncomfortable cramp grip my lower abdomen as I turned toward the hallway.
It was a movement that would change the trajectory of our existence in less than a second.
Margaret, blinded by a cocktail of narcissistic rage and wounded pride, refused to be dismissed. As Daniel turned to guide me past her toward the foyer, she lunged forward around his side with surprising, terrifying speed.
“Get away from my son!” she shrieked.
I tried to pivot out of her way, lifting my foot to step back, but my balance—already compromised by thirty-two weeks of pregnancy and sudden adrenaline—betrayed me.
Before Daniel could scream, before I could raise my hands to protect myself, Margaret drove her heavy, low-heeled shoe forward in a violent, vicious kick straight into my right side, aiming low, right beneath my belly.
The impact was a dull, sickening thud of leather hitting flesh.
An explosion of white-hot agony ripped through my lower abdomen, tearing outward toward my hips and spine with the force of a lightning strike.
“Agh!” I gasped, the air instantly rushing out of my lungs in a strangled wheeze.
The room tilted violently sideways. The marble floor rushed up to meet my eyes.
“Emily!” Daniel roared, his voice cracking with sheer terror as he lunged to catch me.
I didn't make it to the floor standing up. My knees buckled beneath me, folding forward as the wooden dining chair toppled backward with a deafening crash, splintering against the baseboard. I dropped hard to my knees, then slumped sideways onto the cold marble tiles, clutching my belly with both hands as a wave of nausea and blinding pain blinded me.
“Daniel...” I choked out, my voice barely a whisper. “My... my stomach...”
Daniel dropped to his knees beside me, his hands hovering over me, trembling so violently he looked like he was suffering from a seizure. He looked up at Margaret, who was standing frozen a few feet away, her chest heaving, her foot still extended in the finishing pose of the kick.
For one terrifying second, absolute silence enveloped the kitchen.
Then, a warm, heavy wetness began to spread rapidly between my legs, soaking through the fabric of my maternity dress and pooling against the cold white tiles.
I looked down.
Bright, crimson blood—thick and terrifyingly vivid—was soaking into the grout between the marble blocks, spreading in a widening, gruesome puddle beneath my skirt.
Margaret’s face instantly drained of every drop of color. She stared down at the blood, her hands flying to her mouth, her eyes wide with shock. But even then, trapped in the epicenter of her own monstrous violence, the first words out of her mouth were a testament to her poisoned soul:
“She... she made me do it,” Margaret whispered, pointing a shaking finger at me. “She lost her balance on purpose to make me look like a monster!”
Daniel slowly lifted his head from my face.
He didn't look at his mother with anger anymore. The anger was gone, replaced by something much darker, much colder, and infinitely more final. Something inside Daniel Vance—the lifelong dutiful son who had spent thirty-four years making excuses for his mother’s tyranny—snapped with a definitive, unrepairable fracture.

He reached into his pocket, pulled out his smartphone, and unlocked the screen with shaking thumbs.
“No more lies,” Daniel said, his voice entirely dead, devoid of any human emotion. He tapped the emergency icon, pressed three digits, and held the phone to his ear. “Get me the police. My mother just assaulted my pregnant wife and she’s bleeding out on the floor.”
