Chapter 5 - The Gathering Storm in Dublin

Over the next two weeks, Marilyn’s world began to unravel in ways she never could have anticipated.

In her social circle—the upper-middle-class country club crowd of suburban Dublin where image was everything—news of a police citation for assault involving a prominent local matron leaked out faster than a broken pipe. People who had smiled and fawned over her at charity luncheons suddenly found excuses not to return her phone calls. The executive board of the local garden club where she served as treasurer gently suggested she take an “extended leave of absence” until her legal matters were resolved.

And Ethan made good on his promise. He cut off all contact entirely, blocking her number, returning her mail unopened, and notifying her that if she attempted to show up at our apartment or our workplaces, we would file an immediate restraining order.

Yet, despite the mounting pressure, Marilyn remained defiant. According to preliminary reports from the prosecutor’s office, she refused to take a plea deal for a misdemeanor disorderly conduct charge, insisting through her lawyer that she had done nothing wrong and that I had “provoked her into defensive action.”

That meant one thing: a trial.

The court date was set for a Friday morning in early November at the Franklin County Municipal Court downtown.

The night before the trial, I stood in front of the full-length mirror in our hallway. My hair had settled into its new, sharp inverted bob, framing my jawline with dark, polished angles. I wore a tailored navy-blue blazer over a cream silk blouse—professional, composed, and unshakeable.

Ethan walked up behind me, resting his hands gently on my shoulders, looking at my reflection with quiet admiration.

“You ready for tomorrow?” he asked softly.

“I am,” I said, turning around to face him. “I used to think that letting people walk all over me, keeping my head down, and taking the abuse was the price of keeping the peace. But keeping peace with a bully isn't peace. It’s just surrender.”

Ethan smiled, leaning down to press his forehead against mine. “She’s going to lose, Chloe. Every single bit of it.”
