Chapter 4 - The Legal Siege Begins

Eleanor Vance was Wendy’s estranged sister-in-law.
Ten years prior, Wendy had systematically maneuvered Eleanor’s late husband out of the family real-estate trust while he was dying of leukemia, using forged signatures and an army of predatory corporate attorneys. Eleanor had survived the ordeal, rebuilt her practice, and spent the last decade becoming the most lethal divorce and child-welfare litigator in the state.
At 7:15 AM, Eleanor walked into the conference room of her downtown high-rise office. She was sixty-two years old, clad in a charcoal-gray tailored pantsuit, her silver hair cut into a severe bob. She carried two massive thermoses of espresso and dropped a thick legal binder onto the glass table with a resounding thud.
"Show me," Eleanor said without bothering to say good morning.
I plugged the flash drive into her terminal.
The sixty-five-inch monitor on the wall illuminated the room with the 4K recording. We watched it once in real-time. We watched it twice in slow-motion.
When the frame zoomed in on Luca’s hand pinning my thigh beneath the table, Eleanor Vance’s jaw set into concrete. She took off her reading glasses, laid them on the blotter, and let out a long, slow exhale through her teeth.
"Poetic," Eleanor whispered. "The Vance men have always been spineless, but Luca has managed to lower the bar into subterranean depths."
"What are our options?" I asked. I hadn't slept a wink. My eyes burned, but my mind was firing with crystal-clear precision.
Eleanor opened her binder and began writing on a legal pad with a fountain pen.
"First: Criminal," Eleanor said, tapping the nib against the paper. "This is felony assault on a minor under Virginia Code § 18.2-371. Wendy struck a toddler in the face with enough force to cause visible contusions. Kelly’s footage gives us time-stamped, uncompressed forensic evidence. There is no defense of 'reasonable parental discipline' because Wendy is not the legal guardian, and more importantly, the force used was malicious and accompanied by verbal degradation."
"And Luca?"
"Luca is complicit," Eleanor’s eyes flashed with predatory delight. "By physically restraining you from intervening, he acted as a principal in the second degree to the assault. He aided and abetted the battery of his own child. Furthermore, under state law, as a parent, he has an affirmative legal duty to protect his child from imminent harm. He breached that duty with active physical restraint."
"I want them both served today," I said.
"They will be," Eleanor replied smoothly. "I have already alerted Detective Martinez in the Special Victims Unit. He’s a personal friend, and more importantly, he has three daughters. He watched the video twenty minutes ago while drinking his morning coffee. He is currently securing an arrest warrant for Wendy Vance and a criminal summons for Luca."
She turned the page of her notepad.
"Second: Civil and Custody. We are filing an emergency ex parte petition for an immediate order of protection for both you and Fiona against Wendy and Luca. We are demanding sole legal and sole physical custody, emergency exclusive possession of the marital residence, and an immediate freeze on all joint financial assets."
"Luca threatened to lock me out of the house last night," I noted. "He said everything belonged to his family."
Eleanor gave a cold, thin smile that didn't reach her eyes. "Luca has the legal acumen of a decorative gourd. The marital residence was purchased during the marriage. While the down payment came from his family trust, your name is on the deed, and you have made half the mortgage payments out of your design firm salary for four years. We will have him evicted by the sheriff’s department before dinner."
"And the trust?"
"That’s the beauty of it," Eleanor leaned forward, her silver rings catching the morning light. "Wendy’s country-club status relies entirely on her position as chairwoman of the St. Jude Children’s Gala and her seat on the board of the Whispering Pines Country Club. Luca’s position at Mercer & Sterling is entirely dependent on his reputation as a clean, reliable, family-oriented wealth manager. They believe they are untouchable because they have money."
She tapped the flash drive.
"They forgot that in the twenty-first century, money cannot buy back a reputation once the world sees who you truly are."
I looked down at my phone. A new message had arrived from Luca’s mother’s attorney, demanding an immediate return of Fiona to the Vance estate, threatening me with parental kidnapping and malicious wounding charges for pushing Wendy into the cake.
"They’re already drafting their narrative," I said, showing Eleanor the screen. "They’re telling the family I had a psychotic break."
"Let them draft it," Eleanor stood up, smoothing the front of her jacket. "Let them build their paper castle as high as they want. It only makes the fire hotter when we drop the match."

She picked up her phone. "Detective Martinez? This is Eleanor Vance. We are ready to sign the affidavits. Bring the cuffs."
