Chapter 9 - The Ribbon Cutting

Sixteen months later, the skies over the Camden River were clear and bright.
The Camden River Bridge and Civic Plaza was officially complete. It stood as a magnificent testament to modern structural engineering—sleek, elegant, and engineered with absolute mathematical precision to carry hundreds of thousands of vehicles safely across the river every single day.
A massive public ribbon-cutting ceremony was underway. Hundreds of local citizens, municipal leaders, press crews, and construction workers packed the grand plaza.
On the elevated VIP stage, the mayor of the county stepped up to the microphone, praising the engineering marvel and thanking the primary contractors and municipal partners.
Then, the mayor turned toward the side of the stage.
"And now," the mayor announced into the cheering crowd, "I want to call upon the brilliant mind who ensured every single bolt, cable, and concrete pillar of this bridge meets the highest safety standards in the state. Please give a warm round of applause to the lead structural engineer of record, and Principal Managing Director of Valor Engineering, Tamara Collins!"
The crowd erupted into thunderous applause.

As I stepped up to the podium, dressed in a sharp navy blazer, my eyes scanned the front rows of the audience. Sitting near the edge, looking older, more subdued, but undeniably proud, were my parents. Beside them sat Bryce and Nia, who was whistling loudly and waving a small sign with my face on it.
I delivered my speech smoothly, thanking my team, my mentors, and the dedicated construction crews who brought the design to life. I didn't single out my family, but as I stepped down from the podium, I caught my father’s eye. He gave me a slow, respectful nod—acknowledging, for the very first time in my life, that I had built something real, something permanent, and something completely unshakeable.
