Chapter 6 - The Golden Child Crumbles

The aftermath was not a quiet fade-out; it was a slow-motion structural collapse.

The formal legal notice was served on my father the first week of January.

Sarah Chen did not hold back. The filing included an emergency freeze on the joint accounts tied to the farm property, a petition to force the sale of the land, and a formal demand for seven years of retroactive forensic accounting.

Dad called me twenty-two times in forty-eight hours.

I didn't answer. I blocked his number, blocked Ryan’s number, and instructed Sarah that all communication had to occur in writing through counsel.

Mom tried a different approach. She showed up at my apartment complex on a Tuesday afternoon, standing outside my door in a fur-trimmed coat, clutching a casserole dish wrapped in aluminum foil.

I opened the door only as far as the security chain allowed.

"Claire, sweetheart," Mom sobbed, her makeup streaked. "You have to call your father. He’s beside himself. He hasn't slept in three days. That horrible lawyer of yours is threatening to put a lien on our house!"

"Dad stole nearly fifty thousand dollars from me, Mom," I said through the four-inch gap. "That's not a legal dispute. That’s a felony."

"He was managing it for you! To protect you! He was going to give it back once Ryan got settled!"

"Ryan is thirty-one years old," I replied coldly. "He has an executive title and a luxury apartment. Why did he need his little sister's inheritance to buy his wife an imported lace veil?"

Mom’s expression hardened, the veneer of maternal grief cracking. "You are tearing this family apart over money! Over petty jealousy because you weren't on a stupid airplane!"

"I washed with dog shampoo, Mom."

Mom froze.

"Take the casserole home," I said, and closed the door.

Without me serving as the household shock absorber, the family dynamics turned inward, cannibalizing themselves.

I learned the details later through Aunt Melissa, who called me from an unblocked number to apologize. It turned out Melissa had had no idea I was excluded from the wedding; Dad had told the entire extended family that I had caught a severe case of bronchitis and insisted on staying home so I wouldn't infect Grandma.

When Melissa found out the truth—and saw the text messages Chloe had secretly screenshot and shared with her own mother—the family turned on Dad with savage efficiency.

Grandma refused to speak to Dad. Aunt Melissa called him a coward to his face at Sunday mass.

Meanwhile, Dad’s February cruise arrived.

Determined to save face and prove they didn't need me, Dad ordered Ryan to watch Baxter and Daisy.

Ryan flatly refused.

"I have a business retreat in Aspen that weekend," Ryan told them, according to Aunt Melissa. "Put them in a kennel."

"A kennel is six hundred dollars, Ryan!" Dad had shouted. "After what your sister did, our accounts are frozen! You owe me! I paid for your entire wedding!"

"I didn't ask you to pay for it with stolen money, Dad!" Ryan had screamed back. "Chloe's family is looking at me like I'm a con artist! Handle your own damn dogs!"

Chloe moved back in with her parents three weeks later. She cited financial deceit and Ryan's refusal to contribute to their rent while spending his paychecks on sports betting.
