Chapter 6 - The Garden Ceremony

The ceremony was brief, solemn, and breathtakingly real.

There were no elaborate theatricalities, no manufactured drama. The officiant, an old mentor of Daniel's, spoke about marriage not as an endurance test or a merger of obligations, but as an intentional sanctuary.

When Daniel took my hands, his fingers were warm and sure.

“Bonnie,” he said, his voice carrying clearly over the gentle splash of the fountain. “You have spent your whole life being everyone else’s foundation. Today, I promise to be yours. I promise that in our home, you will never have to earn your place, purchase your peace, or apologize for having boundaries. You are loved for who you are, not for what you provide.”

A soft murmur went through Daniel’s side of the aisle. I glanced momentarily at the front row; Mom’s head was bowed, her gloved fingers picking at the seams of her purse.

When it was my turn, I looked into Daniel’s eyes and felt lighter than air. “Daniel, you showed me that real love asks before it takes, and honors what it receives. With you, I am finally home.”

We exchanged rings. The officiant pronounced us husband and wife.

As Daniel leaned down to kiss me, the applause that rose up was genuine and deafening. For a brief, shining hour, the world was entirely ours.
