Chapter 6 - Severing the Ties

The executive suite on the thirty-second floor of the St. Jude Hotel was completely insulated from the chaos below.

Here, there were no shattered wine glasses, no ruined wedding dresses, and no desperate pleas for mercy. The only sound was the soft, rhythmic hum of the central air system and the gentle clink of fine china as a private nurse set a cup of chamomile tea beside my armchair.

I was wrapped in a plush terry-cloth robe, having shed the torn blue silk gown forever. A female physician—Dr. Catherine Althaus, the Vance family’s personal obstetrician who had been flown in on Arthur’s helicopter—finished checking my blood pressure with a practiced, soothing touch.

"One-twenty over seventy-eight, Vivienne," Dr. Althaus said with a warm smile, pulling her stethoscope from her ears. "Your pulse is steadying. The baby’s heart rate is a robust one-hundred-and-forty beats per minute. She is completely unfazed by the evening’s dramatics."

"She?" Arthur Vance’s voice rumbled from the corner of the suite, where he stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the twinkling Manhattan skyline. He turned around, his stern features illuminated by a rare, dazzling grin. "A girl?"

I laughed softly, placing a hand on my stomach, feeling a tiny, rhythmic flutter against my palm. "A girl, Dad. I was going to tell Dominic tonight after the reception. I had the ultrasound picture in my purse."

Arthur’s smile vanished, replaced once more by the icy resolve that had built his empire. "A blessing that you didn't waste it on him. That child will bear the name Vance. She will inherit an empire, and she will never know the touch of cowards."

A discreet knock sounded at the mahogany double doors.

Claire Fontaine entered, carrying her aluminum briefcase and an iPad. She was followed by two junior associates, each carrying thick accordion folders bound with red legal tape.

"The paperwork is ready, Miss Vance," Claire announced, setting the folders on the glass coffee table before me. "We anticipated that this evening would conclude your association with the Montgomery family, so we drafted the petitions in advance."

I looked down at the documents.

*Petition for Immediate Dissolution of Marriage on Grounds of Fraud, Gross Cruelty, and Abandonment.*

*Emergency Ex Parte Motion for Sole Legal and Physical Custody.*

*Application for Permanent Restraining Order.*

"Under the state’s domestic relations law," Claire explained, pointing with a sleek silver pen, "Dominic’s failure to protect a pregnant spouse from physical assault, combined with his recorded complicity in Eleanor’s extortion attempt, provides absolute grounds for an emergency decree. A family court judge signed the temporary restraining order twenty minutes ago. Dominic Montgomery is legally prohibited from coming within one thousand feet of you, your residence, or any medical facility where you receive care."

"And the child?" I asked, looking up into Claire’s sharp eyes.

"Sole custody is yours," Claire replied firmly. "Dominic has no financial claim, no visitation rights without supervised psychological clearance, and given the federal indictments being unsealed against his firm tomorrow morning... he will be far too occupied with avoiding a federal penitentiary to contest it."

"What about his mother?" I asked.

Arthur stepped away from the window, his silver-topped cane resting against his hip. "Eleanor Montgomery was arrested twelve minutes ago in the hotel lobby. The video footage from the bridal suite was transferred directly to the Special Victims and Major Case squads. She is being charged with third-degree assault, conspiracy to commit grand larceny, and felony extortion."

"And Amanda?"

"Amanda broke under five minutes of interrogation," Claire added with a faint, grim smirk. "She surrendered the diamond ring from her purse and signed a full confession implicating Eleanor as the mastermind behind the framing scheme. Amanda is currently cooperating with the District Attorney in exchange for a plea deal. Chloe’s little fantasy wedding is officially a crime scene."

I leaned back against the deep cushions of the armchair, closing my eyes.

For three years, I had walked on eggshells. I had swallowed my pride when Eleanor criticized my cooking, my clothes, my quiet demeanor. I had excused Dominic’s weakness as mere filial loyalty. I had lived small, thinking that humility was the price of true love.

What a pathetic lie I had told myself.

True love does not demand that you diminish yourself so that lesser people can feel tall. True love does not stand silently by while hyenas tear your clothes.

"Sign the documents, Vivienne," Arthur said gently, stepping up to my chair and placing a heavy, gold-nibbed fountain pen into my hand. "Sign them, and close the door on this chapter forever."

I took the pen. The weight of the gold felt cool and solid in my grip.

With steady, deliberate strokes, I signed my name at the bottom of each document:

*Vivienne Vance.*

Not Montgomery. Never again Montgomery.

As I set the pen down, Claire Fontaine’s secure satellite phone buzzed against the table. She tapped the screen, listened for five seconds, and looked up at Arthur.

"Dominic Montgomery is in the private elevator vestibule downstairs," Claire said flatly. "Hotel security has detained him. He is demanding to see his wife. He claims he has an absolute legal right to speak to the mother of his child."

Arthur’s jaw tightened. "Have security remove him to the curb."

"No," I said, opening my eyes and sitting up straight.

Arthur and Claire both turned to look at me in surprise.

"Bring him up," I said, my voice steady, clear, and devoid of fear. "Just him. Under armed guard. Let him stand in this room."

Arthur studied my face for a moment, searching for any trace of lingering weakness. He found none. A slow, approving nod tilted the patriarch's chin.

May you like

"Bring him up," Arthur commanded.
