Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

Forty-eight hours after the hearing, the house of cards began to collapse with catastrophic speed.

I sat at the kitchen table of my small basement apartment, drinking hot tea. On the counter lay a certified letter from the receiver, confirming that the first tranche of frozen funds—a preliminary child support and living allowance of eight thousand dollars—had been deposited into my account that morning.

For the first time in three years, I didn't have to check the balance before buying groceries.

My phone rang. The screen displayed an unknown number from a Denver area code.

I answered. "Hello?"

"Maya."

It was Evan.

His voice was hoarse, ragged, like he had been screaming for hours. In the background, I could hear sirens and the low rumble of city traffic.

"Evan," I said calmly. "You are under a court order not to contact me directly. All communication must go through Brenda Vance."

"Don't hang up! Please, Maya, don't hang up!" he begged. The arrogance that had defined him for seven years had disintegrated entirely. "You don't know what’s happening. Claire... Claire took everything."

I paused, keeping my finger hovering over the end-call button. "What are you talking about?"

"She tried to wire the remaining balance from the Cayman account last night," Evan said, his breath hitching. "She hired an offshore lawyer to move the funds to an account in Zurich before the receiver’s injunction could be served on the Grand Cayman bank. But the receiver caught it. They flagged the transfer. The FBI’s financial crimes task force is at my office right now, Maya. They’re seizing my servers."

"That sounds like a problem for your criminal attorney, Evan," I said.

"She’s blaming me!" Evan yelled, his voice breaking into a sob. "She told the federal agents that I forced her to sign the papers! She told them I threatened her! She told them the seventy-five thousand to your dad was a kickback that I orchestrated! She’s trying to cut a deal with the U.S. Attorney to testify against me!"

I closed my eyes, picturing Claire.

Claire, who had always been the golden child. Claire, who had always known how to weep at precisely the right moment to make Harold open his checkbook. Claire, who had convinced herself that she was the victim even while standing on my neck.

"Did you think she loved you, Evan?" I asked quietly.

Silence fell over the line, heavy and suffocating.

"What?" he croaked.

"Did you really think she loved you?" I repeated. "Claire didn't want you because you were Evan Hart. She wanted you because you were mine. She wanted to prove she could take the one thing I had that she didn't. And when you gave her my home, my savings, and my future, she convinced herself that she was the winner."

"Maya... I made a mistake," Evan wept openly now, the sound pathetic and hollow. "I was terrified. When Lily was born... all those monitors, the doctors telling us she might never walk without braces... I couldn't handle it. I felt like a failure. And Claire was there, telling me I deserved better, telling me I was a king... I was stupid. I was weak."

"You weren't weak, Evan," I said, my voice hardening to iron. "You were greedy. Weak men run away. Greedy men steal their daughter's medical fund on the way out the door."

"I love Lily," he whispered.

"No, you don't," I said. "You love the idea of being a father when it’s convenient. When you can buy a fifty-dollar teddy bear and take a picture for LinkedIn. If you loved Lily, you wouldn't have let her stand behind a marble pillar while you signed a marriage license bought with her inheritance."

"Maya, please—"

"Goodbye, Evan. Tell your lawyer we’ll see him at the deposition on Friday."

I tapped the red button, ending the call.

I set the phone on the table. It buzzed immediately—a text from Claire:

*Maya, he’s lying to you. Evan set up the whole offshore structure. I have the emails. I can give them to your lawyer if you tell the DA to drop the conspiracy charge against me. Please, Maya. Mom is having chest pains. Dad’s firm is being audited by the state licensing board. You’re destroying our family.*

I looked at the message for three seconds.

Then, I forwarded it directly to Brenda Vance’s email address, blocked Claire’s number, and set the phone face-down on the counter.

From the bedroom down the hall, I heard Lily’s voice.

"Mommy! Come look! I drew a mountain with snow on top!"

May you like

I stood up, walked into the sunny bedroom, and sat down on the floor beside my daughter.
