Chapter 7 - The Final Gambit

The rain returned by midnight, turning the city streets into slick, dark mirrors reflecting the neon lights of downtown Chicago.
Inside the subterranean briefing room of the Rinaldi estate, the atmosphere was thick with the scent of gun oil, coffee, and suppressed violence.
Serena stood by the oak table, watching as Victor loaded a spare magazine into his sidearm.
“You’re going after him,” she stated.
“Russo crossed a line,” Victor said without looking up. “He brought your daughter into this. As long as he breathes, neither you nor Lucia will ever be safe in this city.”
“And if you don't come back?” Serena asked, her voice cracking slightly.
Victor stopped. He slowly looked up from the table, his gray eyes locking onto hers. He walked around the table, closing the distance between them until she could feel the heat radiating off his broad shoulders.
“I always come back,” Victor said softly, lifting a hand to gently brush a strand of hair away from her face. “Because I finally have something worth coming home to.”
Before Serena could process the words, Victor leaned down and kissed her.
It wasn't a tentative kiss, nor was it a desperate one. It was deep, fierce, and absolute—a silent promise etched in fire and survival.

“Lock the doors,” Victor whispered against her lips. “Don't open them for anyone except me or Viktor.”
Then, he turned on his heel, motioned to his men, and walked out into the stormy night.
