Chapter 6 - The Zenith Club

The Zenith Club was the crown jewel of Bellgrave’s nightlife—a towering skyscraper of glass and neon where the city’s corrupt elite mingled with cartel bosses over imported champagne and illegal betting rings.

When Declan Hayes stepped through the private VIP entrance, flanked by Vance and a striking, impeccably dressed woman in a charcoal-tailored pantsuit with hair pinned back in sharp sophistication, the entire room went dead silent.

Marcus Vance—a slick, silver-haired man with expensive gold cufflinks and a predatory smile—stood at the head of a private mahogany table surrounded by sweating city councilmen.

“Declan,” Marcus said, raising a crystal glass of scotch with theatrical warmth, though his eyes darted nervously toward his abdomen. “I heard rumors you were... indisposed. Bedridden, even.”

Declan walked forward with absolute, predatory grace, showing no sign of the stitches pulling at his side. He pulled out a chair for Norah, seating her with courtly precision before taking the seat opposite Marcus.

“Rumors of my death are historically premature, Marcus,” Declan replied, his voice smooth as silk and twice as lethal.

Marcus forced a laugh, leaning forward over the table. “Well, let’s get down to business, then. The councilmen and I were just discussing a transition of power at the docks. You’ve been... distracted lately. Accidents happen. It’s time for new management.”

He pushed a thick manila folder across the table containing contracts for the municipal transfer of port security.

Declan didn't touch the folder. He didn't even look at it.

Instead, he slowly poured a glass of neat bourbon, swirling the amber liquid with deliberate indifference.

“Marcus,” Declan said softly. “Do you know what happens to men who try to step into a pair of shoes that were never meant for them?”

“I know what happens to men who bleed out behind locked doors,” Marcus sneered, losing his temper as his false confidence cracked. “Your security is compromised, Declan. Someone got into your private vault last week. Someone put a hole in you, and your men didn't even know it until it was too late.”

The councilmen shifted uncomfortably in their seats, sweating under the sudden, suffocating pressure in the room.

Norah sat quietly beside Declan. She reached out, picked up the manila contract folder, opened it, and began reading the legal clauses with absolute, clinical indifference.

“Your penalty clauses are amateurish, Mr. Vance,” Norah spoke up for the first time, her voice clear, crisp, and cutting through the tension like a razor.

Marcus blinked, staring at her as if she were a ghost. “Who the hell are you?”

“She is my partner in all matters of administration,” Declan said smoothly, his eyes never leaving Marcus’s face. “Continue, Norah.”

Norah tapped a manicured finger against the second page of the contract.

“Section four violates state zoning laws regarding municipal ports, which means the moment you sign this, the federal grand jury currently investigating your offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands will automatically receive copies of these signatures as part of an active RICO subpoena,” Norah recited calmly, looking straight up into Marcus’s terrified eyes. “Shall I read the rest, or would you prefer to pack your bags for federal prison before midnight?”

The color drained entirely from Marcus Vance’s face. His mouth opened, but no words came out. He looked from Norah to Declan, realizing with absolute horror that the woman sitting across from him wasn't a hostage or a maid—she was the sharpest blade in the room.
