Chapter 6 - The Paper Trail

That evening, Sarah arrived at my apartment carrying an old leather-bound ledger and a portable scanner.

We spread the contents across my small kitchen table. While Maya slept in her crib in the adjoining room, Sarah poured green tea into two chipped mugs.

"I went through the study after Mom left for her dinner with Sterling," Sarah whispered. "Look at this."

She slid several bank statements across the laminate table.

"Eleanor isn't just trying to control Hillcrest out of pride," Sarah said. "She’s broke."

I stared at the red ink on the balances. "Broke? Mother has the family endowment."

"She *had* it," Sarah corrected. "Two years ago, she invested heavily in a commercial development project run by her social circle in Clearwater. It collapsed last winter. She has been covering the quarterly shortfalls by borrowing against grandfather's secondary liquid accounts. If Hillcrest passes to you, Arthur’s executor is required to perform an exhaustive audit of all transfers made during the last eighteen months of his life."

The puzzle snapped together.

"The audit would expose her," I realized, the full picture emerging. "She didn't just want Hillcrest; she needed to keep the primary trust under her absolute control to conceal the fact that she spent over six hundred thousand dollars of Grandfather’s capital to cover her own bad debts."

"Exactly," Sarah said. "If Maya was declared an incapacitated minor and you were ruled incompetent, Eleanor would have been appointed legal guardian of the entire estate without any external audit requirement. She wasn't just insulting Maya, Clara. She was executing an embezzler’s exit strategy."

"Did Sterling know?"

"Sterling knows whatever keeps his retainer paid," Sarah said grimly. "Mom told him that you were living in squalor, that you were taking narcotics for depression, and that the child had manifested congenital neurological defects that required institutional trust management."

I looked at the receipts, the canceled checks, and the forged authorization signatures bearing Eleanor’s distinctive handwriting beneath my grandfather’s shaky mark.

"We don't just have a defense, Sarah," I said, touching the edges of the bank statements. "We have the whole truth."
