Chapter 7 - DAWN OVER MILAN

Three days later, the morning sun broke over the glittering skyline of Milan, casting a warm, golden glow across the cobblestone courtyards and ancient spires of the city.
Inside the penthouse office overlooking the Duomo, the air smelled of rich espresso, aged leather, and expensive cedar.
Elena Rossi sat behind a massive mahogany desk, her fingers flying across the keys of a secure terminal as she cross-referenced the final encrypted ledgers from the orange flash drive. She wore a sharp, charcoal-gray tailored blazer over a silk blouse, her dark curls smoothed back into a polished, professional chignon. All traces of frostbite and terror from the mountain pass were gone, replaced by an aura of fierce, uncompromising authority.
The heavy oak door of the office swung open.
Luca Marcelli stepped inside, carrying two porcelain cups of espresso. He wore a crisp black tailored suit, his sleeves rolled up slightly to reveal the strong, corded muscle of his forearms. He looked every bit the undisputed head of the Marcelli syndicate—a modern mob boss who ruled with an iron fist and a razor-sharp intellect.
He walked over to the desk, setting one of the cups down beside Elena’s keyboard.
“How’s the final audit looking?” Luca asked, leaning his hip against the edge of the desk and taking a sip of his coffee.
Elena didn't look up from her screen, though a faint, knowing smile played at the corners of her lips.
“Clean,” she murmured, hitting the final enter key. “Donato’s secret accounts have been fully frozen, transferred to the family’s primary reserve fund, and his co-conspirators within the regional tax authority have all received anonymous federal audit notices courtesy of my personal contacts in Bern.”
She leaned back in her leather executive chair, turning her head to look up at him. Her large brown eyes sparkled with a mixture of amusement and challenge.
“And as for Vanguard Logistics,” she continued smoothly, “the board of directors accepted my preliminary restructuring report this morning. They also approved a rather substantial promotion and permanent salary increase for their senior forensic accountant.”
Luca raised an eyebrow, a slow, dangerous grin spreading across his face.
“Is that so? And does this promotion come with hazard pay for surviving avalanches and Russian hit squads?”
“It comes with complete administrative control over the syndicate’s financial ledger,” Elena replied, tilting her chin up defiantly. “Which means no more skimming, no more dummy corporations, and absolutely no more throwing accountants off cliffs.”
Luca chuckled—a deep, rich sound that rarely escaped him. He reached out, his warm fingers gently brushing a stray curl from her cheek, tracing the soft line of her jawline.
“Deal,” Luca murmured, his voice dropping an octave as his dark eyes locked onto hers. “Though I have to admit… you looked far better in a blood-stained burgundy coat and tactical combat boots than you do in corporate gray.”
Elena’s breath hitched slightly at his touch, the familiar spark of intense chemistry flaring between them once more. She reached up, her hand resting flat against the crisp fabric of his shirt over his steady, beating heart.
“Careful, Mr. Marcelli,” she whispered, her lips parting into a breathless smile. “Keep flirting with the accountant, and she might just audit your entire life.”

Luca leaned down, his lips brushing the shell of her ear as his strong arms wrapped securely around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest.
“Audit away, Ms. Rossi,” he whispered against her skin. “I’ve got nothing to hide.”
