Chapter 4 - The House on the Hill

By 7:45 PM, a sleek black town car was idling curbside outside Harper’s apartment building.

She had tried to convince herself all afternoon that she could ignore the invitation, that she could throw the card away and pretend nothing happened. But when she looked out her window and saw the silent sedan waiting downstairs, she realized men like Damian Vance didn’t take ‘no’ for an answer—not because they were cruel, but because their world operated on absolute obedience.

Changing into a simple, elegant navy blue dress, she descended the stairs and let the silent driver escort her out of the city limits and up into the wealthy, heavily guarded estates overlooking Lake Michigan.

The vehicle passed through massive wrought-iron gates flanked by security checkpoints, winding up a private, tree-lined drive before stopping in front of a sprawling, modern stone mansion that looked more like a fortress than a home.

A butler in a charcoal suit met her at the grand double doors, leading her through cavernous hallways adorned with museum-quality art until they reached a set of glass doors opening onto a private terrace overlooking the moonlit lake.

Damian stood by the stone railing, holding a crystal glass of amber liquor. He had changed into a sharp charcoal suit, the white shirt beneath open at the collar, revealing the edge of the dark tattoos curling up his neck.

He turned as she approached, his dark eyes sweeping over her with an intensity that made her breath hitch.

“You actually came,” he noted, his voice low and rich.

“When you have two men guarding a flower shop like it’s a federal reserve, you don’t leave much room for debate,” Harper retorted, trying to mask her nervous flutter with a flash of sarcasm.

Damian offered a faint, genuine smile, stepping away from the railing. “Forgive the dramatics. But after what happened in the alley, caution is a baseline requirement in my world.”

“And what world is that, exactly?” Harper asked, stepping out onto the terrace, letting the crisp lake breeze catch her hair. “Because the last time I checked, florists don’t usually get VIP escorts from men named Marcus.”

Damian set his glass down on a stone table. He walked closer, stopping just a few feet away, his gaze steady and unblinking. “You saved my life, Harper. Even if you thought you were playing a clumsy role in a domestic dispute, those men were sent by a rival faction trying to test my reach. By inserting yourself into the crossfire, you disrupted their timing. In doing so, you tied your fate to mine.”

Harper crossed her arms, feeling a sudden shiver run down her spine—and it had nothing to do with the wind. “Are you threatening me, Damian?”

May you like

“Never,” he replied instantly, his voice dropping into a tone of absolute, unshakable conviction. “I am protecting you. In my world, enemies look for leverage. The moment those men saw me with you in that alley, you became a target. Which means you are safer under my roof—or under my direct watch—than anywhere else in this city.”

Before Harper could process the sheer weight of his confession, the heavy glass doors behind them shattered violently.
