Chapter 4 - The Ledger of Vale Enterprises

Down in his private basement office—a subterranean command center housed three floors beneath the garage level of Vale House—Adrian Vale sat in a high-backed leather chair, staring at three separate computer monitors glowing with real-time financial data.

The room was dark except for the cool blue light reflecting off his sharp, unblinking eyes.

“He’s breaking down by two-thirty,” Dante said, leaning against the edge of a steel-reinforced desk, holding a cup of black coffee that had gone cold an hour ago.

Adrian didn’t look up from a spreadsheet detailing the offshore subsidiary accounts Victor Moretti had attempted to hide in the Cayman Islands. “Victor doesn’t break down, Dante. He negotiates. He spends the first four hours of captivity calculating who he can bribe, and the next two hours realizing nobody in this city has a suicide wish large enough to cross me.”

“His primary attorney is already downstairs demanding a writ of habeas corpus,” Dante noted, taking a grim sip of his coffee. “Says keeping a sitting municipal stakeholder’s associate locked in a private residential basement constitutes unlawful confinement under federal guidelines.”

A cold, humorless smile touched the corner of Adrian’s mouth. “Tell our legal counsel to send Victor’s attorney a copy of the 2024 tax evasion audit we compiled on his firm last month. Add a postscript noting that if he files a single paper with the district court before dawn, I’ll release the second audit—the one involving the judgeship kickbacks—directly to the federal prosecutor’s office.”

Dante chuckled darkly. “That’ll shut him up by breakfast.”

“How is she?” Adrian asked abruptly, the cold corporate commander instantly vanishing, replaced by a sharp, focused intensity.

Dante paused, his expression softening into something respectful. “Security feeds show she locked the adjoining suite door at 1:14 AM. She hasn't left the room since. One of the female housekeeping staff brought up a tray of herbal tea and light fruit an hour ago; she didn't open the door, but she spoke through the wood. Told her she wasn't hungry, thanked her politely, and asked her to leave it on the hall table.”

Adrian nodded slowly, leaning back in his leather chair and rubbing the bridge of his nose. The physical fatigue of the wedding day was beginning to catch up to him, but his mind refused to shut down. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw the dark, bruised handprint on Elena’s shoulder.

“She’s terrified that any kindness is a trap,” Adrian murmured, more to himself than to his chief enforcer. “She’s spent her entire life believing that love is just another word for leverage.”

“Give her time, boss,” Dante said quietly, pushing off the desk. “You just blew up her entire universe in less than twelve hours. For a girl who’s lived inside a fortress of glass and fear, freedom feels a lot like falling off a cliff.”

“Make sure the security detail around her suite is doubled,” Adrian instructed, standing up and buttoning his vest. “No visitors. No family members. If her mother tries to come upstairs, intercept her before she reaches the corridor. I want Elena to wake up tomorrow and realize that the only people in this house are the ones keeping her safe.”

“Consider it done,” Dante said, turning toward the heavy steel exit door. “Are you getting any sleep tonight, Adrian?”

May you like

Adrian looked back down at the glowing monitors, where Victor Moretti’s corporate empire was systematically being dismantled, line by line, share by share, into the vast, inescapable machinery of Vale Enterprises.

“Sleep is for men who still have enemies left to figure out,” Adrian said quietly. “I’ll sleep when Victor signs over the rest of the portfolio.”
