She Was Hired to Clean the Mafia Boss’s Room—But Her Voice Became the One Thing His Pain Couldn’t Defeat

Mara Bellini had been inside the Valenti mansion less than a minute when a man screamed somewhere upstairs.

The security guard searching her purse barely reacted.

Neither did Mara.

She needed this job too badly.

The pay was four times what a live-in housekeeper should make. No references required. Immediate start. Her brother’s rehabilitation payment was due Friday, and Mara had thirty-seven dollars left in her account.

Then the owner told her where she’d be working.

The third floor.

The screaming man’s rooms.

His name was Nicholas Valenti.

There were rules.

Never approach him from the right without warning. Never touch his prosthetic leg unless he asked. Never mention hospitals. Never persuade him to take medication.

And one more.

“Do not feel sorry for him.”

Minutes later, Mara opened Nicholas’s bedroom door.

A glass flew past her head and shattered against the wall.

“Leave.”

Mara looked at the broken pieces.

“You missed.”

“I wasn’t trying to.”

“Then your aim is excellent.”

That was when she saw him.

A man twisted beneath the sheets, gripping the thigh above his missing lower leg, his face gray with pain.

The prosthesis stood untouched across the room.

Mara knew that kind of pain.

She also knew she was forbidden from treating it.

So she pulled up a chair.

Nicholas stared at her.

“What are you doing?”

“Waiting.”

“For what?”

“For you to stop trying to frighten me.”

His eyes narrowed.

Then another wave of pain hit.

And Mara began tapping one finger slowly against the wooden chair.

Tap.

Pause.

Tap.

Then four quiet notes from a lullaby her mother used to hum during thunderstorms.

Nicholas cursed at her to stop.

Mara kept going.

And little by little, something in the room began to change.
