By noon, the story was no longer about a carpenter who had struck his bride at Harrow Ridge. The security footage from the vineyard gate—captured by the private security firm Richard Vance had hired to keep out the uninvited—had mysteriously found its way into the hands of the local news outlet in Santa Rosa.

It showed Amber Vance, her face contorted with a vicious, theatrical disgust, lifting a glass of sparkling wine and hurling it directly into Clara’s face from four feet away.

It showed the old woman standing still, soaking wet, trembling under the shock.
