Chapter 9 - THE RECKONING

The private dining room at Trattoria del Sole had never seen a Monday morning quite like this.

At 11:00 AM, the heavy wooden doors were kicked open with a thunderous bang that cracked the doorframe.

Don Vittorio Bianchi, sitting at the head table enjoying his morning espresso and biscotti, looked up in alarm.

Lorenzo Duca walked into the room. He wasn't alone. Six armed enforcers filed in behind him, sealing every exit, while Marco Rossi walked right beside Lorenzo carrying a heavy leather briefcase.

“Lorenzo? What is the meaning of this?” Vittorio spluttered, standing up shakily from his chair, his face flushing crimson. “Is this how you treat an elder of the commission? Breaking into a private establishment with armed—?”

Lorenzo didn't answer immediately. He walked right up to the table, pulled out a chair opposite Vittorio, and sat down. He placed the heavy manila dossier right in the center of the white tablecloth, sliding it across toward the old boss.

Vittorio glanced down at the papers. As his eyes scanned the first page—the coroner's report from Syracuse, the bank transfers, the signed execution order bearing his own secondary signature—the remaining color in his face vanished entirely.

“Where... where did you get this?” Vittorio whispered, his hands trembling so violently he knocked his espresso cup over, sending dark coffee spilling across the white linen.

“Fifteen years ago, you murdered an innocent accountant named Thomas Hayes to cover up your own embezzlement,” Lorenzo said, his voice dangerously low, cutting through the room like a razor blade. “You blamed him for stealing three million dollars. You destroyed his family, orphaned his fourteen-year-old daughter, and lied to my father's face.”

Vittorio backed up against the wall, clutching the edge of the table. “It was... it was business, Lorenzo! The old man was unstable, he was going to ruin us all—!”

“He was loyal,” Lorenzo corrected, standing up slowly, towering over the old man. “And his daughter spent the last six months scrubbing the floors of my estate while you sat across from me at dinner drinking my wine.”

Vittorio looked toward the door, realizing too late that there was no escape. “Lorenzo... please. We are family. We can negotiate a settlement. A percentage of the shipping contracts—property in Queens—name your price—!”

“You cannot negotiate with a ghost, Vittorio,” Lorenzo said quietly.

He signaled Marco with a single nod.

Marco stepped forward, tossing a pair of heavy steel handcuffs onto the table, right beside the spilled coffee and the dossier.

“You’re not going to a federal prison, Vittorio,” Lorenzo said as he turned his back and walked toward the exit. “You’re going to a private facility in upstate New York where you will spend the rest of your natural life writing a full, notarized confession detailing every crime, every bribe, and every murder you committed over the last forty years. And every cent you stole from the Hayes family will be returned to Thomas’s granddaughter with compound interest.”

As Lorenzo stepped out into the bright Manhattan sunlight, the heavy iron doors of the restaurant closed behind him, sealing away the last remnants of the old, corrupt guard.
