Chapter 9 - The Voice of the Covenant

The blinding white tactical lights of the main lodge flooded down into the bunker opening, forcing me to squint as I pulled myself up out of the floor hatch and stepped into the ruined room.
Every single weapon in the room instantly pivoted toward me. Six tactical operators in full combat gear locked their laser sights onto my chest.
Marcus lowered his pistol from Khalid’s head, turning around with a slow, triumphant grin stretching across his scarred face.
“Well, well, well,” Marcus sneered, looking me up and down. “The little waitress from Manhattan. You’ve caused us a tremendous amount of trouble, my dear.”
Khalid struggled against his zip-ties, his eyes widening in horror as he looked at me.
“No, Hannah!” he shouted, straining against his guards. “Why did you come out? You were supposed to stay down there!”
“Because I’m tired of running, Khalid,” I said, my voice cutting through the tense air of the room with a surprising, unnatural calm.
I didn't look at the guns. I didn't look at the laser sights painting red dots across my shirt. I looked straight at Marcus, standing tall with my shoulders squared, letting the quiet dignity of my grandfather’s legacy take over every fiber of my being.
“You want the linguistic key?” I asked, my voice ringing clear and steady in the ruined lodge. “You want the legal translation of the First Covenant?”
Marcus chuckled, stepping closer, holstering his pistol and pulling a digital recording device from his tactical vest.
“I knew you were smart,” Marcus said, holding the microphone out toward me. “Recite the phonetic parameters for the southern land patents into this recorder, and your friend here gets to walk away. Refuse, and I put a bullet in his brain right now.”
The operators tightened their grips on their weapons, waiting for the command.
I took a deep, steady breath.
I didn't look at the recorder. I looked past Marcus, staring out the shattered glass window of the lodge where the snow was still falling silently over the dark New York mountains.
Then, I opened my mouth.
I didn't speak in English. I didn't speak in modern Arabic.
I spoke in the ancient, resonant tongue of the First Covenant—the precise, melodic, and terrifyingly powerful dialect that had been hidden in the throats of my ancestors for thousands of years.
As the first syllables left my lips, something extraordinary happened.
It wasn't just speech. The acoustic frequency of the dialect—honed by millennia to resonate within large stone chambers and desert canyons—hit the structural acoustics of the wooden lodge with physical force. The windows began to vibrate. The dust motes in the air suspended themselves in rhythmic patterns.
The tactical operators froze, their eyes glazing over in sheer, hypnotic confusion as the ancient phonemes washed over them like an ocean wave.
Even Marcus stopped dead in his tracks, dropping his hand, his mouth parting in stunned disbelief as the beauty and power of the language paralyzed his higher cognitive functions.
I didn't stop. I kept reciting—not a surrender, but the operational command sequence my grandfather had taught me as the ultimate defense mechanism of the Keeper.
The broadcast override.
Simultaneously, across the room, the laptop on the mahogany desk suddenly beeped loudly. A green light flashed across the screen.
The automated satellite upload had just completed.
At that exact second, every single tactical radio strapped to the operators' chests lit up with a piercing, high-pitched screech, followed by an automated emergency broadcast siren.
A synthetic voice echoed from their radios: “WARNING. SECURE NETWORK COMPROMISED. HIGH-PRIORITY METADATA BROADCAST DETECTED ACROSS GLOBAL INTERPOL AND UN LEGAL CHANNELS. SECURE PROTOCOL OVERRIDE ACTIVATED.”
Marcus whipped his head around toward his radio, shouting frantically, “Report! What’s happening?!”
A panicked voice crackled through the static from their command vehicle outside: “Commander! We’re being hit with mass data subpoenas from Geneva! Every land patent, every foundational claim, every sovereign title associated with the Orion Syndicate has just been flagged as fraudulent by the International Court of Justice! Our bank accounts, our shell companies, our assets—they’re being frozen in real-time!”
Color drained completely from Marcus’s face. The unstoppable empire of corporate syndicates and intelligence brokers had just been legally dismantled in less than thirty seconds by a single digital data burst from a rustic mountain cabin.
Before Marcus could draw his weapon again, the heavy wooden front doors of the lodge were kicked off their remaining hinges.
A team of federal marshals and international security personnel, led by heavily armed operatives carrying official UN insignia, swarmed into the room, shouting commands and pinning the Orion Syndicate mercenaries to the floor before they could fire a single shot.
Within moments, the room was secured.
Marcus was hauled to his feet in handcuffs, glaring at me with venomous hatred as he was dragged out into the snow.
The silence rushed back into the room, broken only by the crackling of the fire in the stone hearth.
Khalid stood frozen, the zip-ties on his wrists cut away by one of the arriving rescue officers. He stared at me as if seeing a ghost.
“You... you didn't just recite the land patents,” Khalid whispered in absolute awe as he walked slowly toward me. “You transmitted the master operational override code that triggered the international legal dead-switch your grandfather built into the archive.”

I let out a long, trembling breath, the adrenaline finally draining out of my system, leaving my knees weak.
“My grandfather told me,” I said softly, managing a faint, exhausted smile, “that words would save my life.”
