Chapter 8 - THE HEIR OF BEACON HILL

Three months later.

The snow had melted away, replaced by the vibrant, blooming green of late spring across the lawns of the Beacon Hill estate and the Manhattan townhouse alike.

The Cross Syndicate had undergone a massive restructuring. The corrupt capos were gone, replaced by loyalists who understood that the true strength of an empire lay not in cruelty, but in protection.

Inside the grand dining hall of the Manhattan townhouse, sunlight poured through crystal windows that no longer felt cold.

At the head of the table sat Damon Cross, wearing an open-collared white shirt instead of his usual armored charcoal suits. To his right sat Milo, laughing out loud as he used a silver spoon to feed a piece of pancake to a small, fluffy golden retriever puppy that Damon had finally agreed to let him adopt.

And sitting next to Milo, passing the maple syrup with a calm, easy grace that had once seemed impossible in this fortress of shadows, was Nora Bennett.

The New York tabloids had spent weeks speculating about the mysterious waitress from Queens who had suddenly appeared inside the most feared household on the East Side. Some called her a gold-digger; others called her a hostage.

None of them knew the truth.

That she wasn't a hostage, and she wasn't an employee anymore.

A soft knock sounded at the open dining room doors. Marcus Reyes stepped inside, holding a thick manila folder with a calm, satisfied expression.

“It’s done, boss,” Marcus said, nodding respectfully toward Damon and Nora. “The federal indictments against the remaining Italian cells have been finalized. Their assets are fully seized. Boston and Manhattan are completely secure.”

Damon didn't look up from his coffee, though a quiet satisfaction flickered in his dark eyes. “Good. Burn the files, Marcus. We’re done looking backward.”

“Yes, sir.” Marcus turned to leave, but paused, glancing down at Milo and the puppy before offering a rare, genuine grin. “Oh, and Nora... the florist dropped off the arrangements for the weekend.”

Nora blushed slightly, feeling Damon’s warm gaze shift from his coffee to her face.

“Thank you, Marcus,” Nora said.

As Marcus walked out, closing the heavy doors behind him, the dining hall fell back into a peaceful, warm silence—the kind of silence that wasn't born of fear or isolation, but of a family finally put back together.

Damon reached across the mahogany table, his large, strong fingers wrapping securely around Nora’s hand.

She squeezed back, intertwining her fingers with his.

The Harbor King had spent half his life believing that love was a weakness, that caring for someone was an invitation for a blade in the dark. But as he looked across the table at his son laughing with the dog, and then up into the fierce, brilliant eyes of the woman who had brought them both back from the edge of the abyss, Damon finally understood the truth his father had tried to teach him all those years ago.

The most dangerous enemy wasn't the one who slept under your roof.

May you like

It was the one who wasn't there to fight for you when the night got cold.

And as the spring wind rustled through the courtyard outside, Damon Cross knew he would never have to fight alone again.
