Chapter 6 - Shadows on the Waterfront

The winter gala was supposed to be a triumphant display of power and acceptance, but the undercurrents of Chicago’s criminal underworld did not sleep just because Adrian Moretti had found a new focal point for his life.
It started with a whisper late Tuesday night.
Claire was reviewing community grant allocations in her office when the private elevator chimed. Instead of an assistant, the scar-faced enforcer—whose name she had finally learned was Viktor—stepped out, his usually impassive face etched with grim tension.
“Mr. Moretti needs you in the secure briefing room on the sub-level, Miss Bennett,” Viktor said without preamble.
Claire didn't hesitate. She stood up, locked her portfolio, and followed Viktor down into the bowels of the Moretti Tower, past two checkpoints of armed security, into a windowless concrete room dominated by encrypted monitors and satellite maps.
Adrian stood at the head of the conference table, his suit jacket discarded, his shirt sleeves rolled up, staring at a frozen aerial photograph of a shipping terminal on the southern docks.
When Claire walked in, Adrian looked up immediately.
“Leave us, Viktor,” Adrian commanded.
The enforcer nodded and slipped out of the room, sealing the heavy steel door behind him.
“What’s happened?” Claire asked, walking directly to the table.
“Dante Russo,” Adrian said, his voice dropping into a dark, frozen register that made the hairs on the back of Claire’s arms stand up. “My father’s old rival. He’s spent the last five years hiding out in Miami while his syndicate slowly rotted from the inside. Now he’s back in Chicago.”
Claire frowned. “What does that have to do with me?”
Adrian walked over to her, his gray eyes searching her face with fierce, protective urgency.
“Russo isn’t just looking to reclaim his old territory,” Adrian said quietly. “Yesterday afternoon, one of my intelligence leaks intercepted a communication from his inner circle. Russo knows about you, Claire. He knows you’re the first person in a decade to pierce my defenses. He thinks you’re my weakness.”
The words hung in the cold air of the briefing room like a death sentence.
Claire felt a cold shiver run down her spine, but to her own surprise, panic didn't take over. Instead, a wave of stubborn anger rose in her chest.
“So I’m a target?” she asked, her voice steady.
“You are more than a target,” Adrian replied, his jaw tight. “Russo operates in the shadows. He doesn't fight fair; he doesn't respect boundaries. He wants to hurt me by destroying the things I care about.”
Adrian reached out, taking both of her hands in his. His grip was fiercely tight, desperate in a way she had never seen before.
“That’s why I’m sending you away, Claire,” Adrian said. “Tonight. A private jet is fueled at Midway. My personal security detail will take you to a secure estate in the Swiss Alps until I handle Russo.”
Claire pulled her hands out of his grip.
Adrian stared at her in shock. “Claire—this isn't a negotiation. Russo is a monster. I won’t risk your life.”
“No,” Claire said, her voice ringing out clearly in the concrete room.
“No?” Adrian repeated, his eyebrows drawing together in disbelief. “You don't understand the scale of what—u”
“I understand perfectly,” Claire interrupted, stepping closer until she was standing right in front of him. “You think protecting me means locking me away in a glass cage on the other side of the planet so you can play hero all by yourself.”
“It’s survival, Claire!”
“It’s cowardice!” Claire snapped back, her eyes flashing with fire. “You spent your whole life building this fortress because you thought caring about someone made you weak. And now that someone actually matters to you, your first instinct is to push them away?! I am not a piece of porcelain you can put on a shelf when things get dangerous, Adrian Moretti!”
Adrian stared at her, completely stunned. For the first time since she had met him, the terrifying, untouchable king of Chicago looked like a man who had just been disarmed by a force of nature he never saw coming.
Before he could speak, the secure terminal on the wall beeped frantically.
A red alert flashed across the screen.
Viktor burst back into the briefing room without knocking, his face pale.
“Boss,” Viktor gasped, looking at Adrian. “Russo’s men just hit the downtown community center on North Clark Street. The one Miss Bennett funded on Friday. They didn’t rob it. They firebombed it.”
Claire’s breath caught in her throat. The North Clark Street center—the place where she had spent her childhood, where kids from her old neighborhood went after school to study and stay off the streets.
Adrian’s face went entirely dead. The temperature in the room dropped below freezing.

He slowly turned his head to look at Claire. The last trace of hesitation vanished from his eyes, replaced by a cold, terrifying fury that could have burned a city to ash.
“He wants a war,” Adrian whispered softly, reaching into his jacket and pulling out a heavy, matte-black firearm, checking the slide with a smooth, practiced motion. He looked directly at Claire. “Then we’ll give him one.”
