Chapter 5 - The Fallout

While Emily slept soundly in the luxurious quiet of the estate’s second-floor guest suite, downtown Chicago was waking up to a media firestorm.

By 7:00 AM on Friday, the video from L'Étoile had gone viral across every major social media platform.

“MYSTERY WAITRESS KISSES UNDERWORLD TYCOON VINCENT DELUCA AFTER PUBLIC HUMILIATION!” screamed the headlines of the city’s leading tabloid.

Clips of Tyler Hayes sneering, “Who would ever choose you when women like Vanessa exist?” were spliced directly together with footage of Vincent DeLuca stepping out of his private table, lifting Emily’s chin, and silencing the entire room with a single, devastating kiss.

Within hours, the internet had done what the internet does best: digital sleuthing.

Tyler’s identity, his tech startup, his corporate office address, and his newly minted fiancée, Vanessa Sterling, were dragged into the glaring light of public scrutiny. The internet showed no mercy. Millions of outraged users flooded Tyler’s company social media pages with scathing reviews, demanding his immediate firing for public harassment and misogyny.

By noon on Friday, Sterling Real Estate—Vanessa’s family’s multi-million-dollar development firm—issued an urgent public statement announcing that Tyler Hayes had been “indefinitely suspended” from his consulting partnership with their firm, citing behavior that “does not align with our corporate values.”

Vanessa’s engagement ring—the massive diamond Tyler had proudly flaunted just the night before—was reportedly returned to him in a cardboard box left at the front desk of his office building, accompanied by a note ending their relationship permanently.

And at the center of the storm sat Tyler Hayes, barricaded inside his high-rise apartment, watching his carefully constructed social standing evaporate into thin air like smoke.
