Chapter 10 - The Horizon We Built

An hour later, the storm had passed, leaving behind a sky washed clean in shades of midnight blue and silver moonlight.

The girls were fast asleep in their beds, completely unaware of the violence that had briefly brushed against their sanctuary.

I stood out on the private glass balcony of the penthouse, the cool autumn breeze tugging gently at my hair, looking out over the glittering expanse of downtown Chicago stretching out toward the horizon.

Footsteps sounded softly behind me on the hardwood floor.

A moment later, a warm, familiar weight settled across my shoulders as Adrian draped a heavy cashmere coat over me. He stepped up beside me, resting his hands on the glass railing.

“They’re gone, Camille,” he said softly, breaking the quiet. “The federal marshals have them. The indictments are sealed. You will never have to look over your shoulder again.”

I turned my head to look at him. In the moonlight, the harsh, severe angles of his face softened. The pale scar above his eyebrow caught the silver light, a testament to a world of violence he had fought his way through to reach this quiet place.

“You risked everything tonight,” I whispered, my voice trembling slightly. “You brought the war right to your own front door.”

Adrian turned to face me, his dark eyes searching my expression with an intensity that took my breath away.

“I didn't risk anything that mattered,” he said quietly. “Because everything that matters to me was standing right inside these walls.”

He reached out, taking my cold hands in his warm palms, lifting them gently.

“When I saw you in that grocery store aisle six years ago, walking away with bruises you tried to hide under your sleeves, I made a silent promise to myself. I swore that if you ever needed someone to stand between you and the dark, I would be there.”

He paused, a rare, vulnerable smile touching his lips.

“You thought you were surviving, Camille. You thought you were just hiding out in a cruel world. But you were building a path straight back to where you belong.”

Tears spilled over my lashes, but this time, they weren't tears of fear or sorrow. They were tears of absolute, profound release.

I leaned forward, resting my forehead against his chest, breathing in the scent of cedarwood and rain. His arms came around me, wrapping me in a circle of warmth and unshakeable security that stretched out as far as the lake could see.

“Yes,” I whispered against his shirt, closing my eyes as the city lights twinkled far below us. “I’m home.”
