Sophie was kneeling on the kitchen floor.

Tears covered her cheeks.

In front of her sat a stainless-steel dog bowl filled with dry cereal.

For one terrible second, I couldn’t move.

Then she looked at me.

“Daddy…”

I picked her up immediately.

My fiancée Vanessa rolled her eyes and called Sophie spoiled.

She claimed she was only teaching my daughter not to waste food.

Then Sophie whispered something worse.

“She locked me in the pantry last night.”

Vanessa grabbed her arm.

“Stop lying!”

I caught Vanessa’s wrist.

“Take your hand off my daughter.”

What happened next ended our engagement.

Within minutes, security was escorting Vanessa from my home while her ring lay on the kitchen floor.

Sophie clung to me and asked the question no child should have to ask:

“Daddy… will she come back?”

I promised she wouldn’t.

But as I held my daughter, I realized I had another question to answer.

How long had Sophie been suffering while I trusted someone else to protect her?
