Chapter 6 - Shadows on the Perimeter

The relief that followed Eleanor Davis’s successful entry into surgery was short-lived.
By noon, Eleanor was out of the primary procedure and resting in the intensive surgical suite, her vitals stable, the mechanical heart-lung machine disconnected in favor of the newly implanted, perfectly functioning donor valve. Dr. Vance had personally emerged from the double doors, his face radiant with professional triumph, confirming that the critical threshold had been crossed.
Chloe had collapsed into a chair in the private waiting suite Tariq had requisitioned, weeping quiet tears of profound gratitude.
But outside the glass walls of the hospital, a storm of a different kind was brewing.
Tariq stood at the panoramic window of the executive lounge on the eighth floor, his phone pressed to his ear. Below, on the rain-slicked city streets, several nondescript black sedans were circling the block with unnatural regularity.
“Speak,” Tariq commanded into the phone.
On the other end of the line was Omar, his intelligence director in London.
*“The leaks were deliberate, Tariq,”* Omar said, his tone grim. *“Julian Sterling’s syndicate caught wind of your flight diversion this morning. When you failed to appear at the Denver summit, Sterling realized you were exposed outside your typical security envelope. They’ve traced the emergency financial wire you sent to the Midwestern Institute.”*
Tariq’s eyes narrowed into slits of black obsidian. Julian Sterling—a disgraced Anglo-American venture capitalist whose hedge fund Tariq had systematically dismantled eighteen months ago after uncovering Sterling’s involvement in human trafficking and money laundering. Sterling was desperate, bankrupt, and cornered. And a cornered predator with nothing left to lose was the most dangerous creature alive.
*“Sterling knows the girl is your blind spot,”* Omar continued. *“He doesn't know who she is, but he knows you spent five million dollars to alter a surgical schedule for her mother. To a man like Sterling, that looks like leverage.”*
“Let him try,” Tariq said, his voice flat and deadly.
*“Tariq, he has hired private paramilitaries out of the Balkans. They aren't interested in corporate negotiations. If they intercept her, they will use her to force you to release the frozen escrow accounts in Zurich.”*
Tariq hung up the phone without another word. He turned to face the room.
Chloe had changed out of her scrubs into a clean, simple knit sweater and jeans that Tariq’s staff had discreetly procured for her. She was sipping hot chamomile tea, her color finally returning, though her eyes remained wide and anxious as she watched Tariq’s posture stiffen.
“Something is wrong,” she said, setting her cup down. “Who was on the phone?”
Tariq looked at her. In the soft light of the lounge, she looked fragile, yet there was a deep, unyielding core of resilience in her posture. She had faced death and poverty without flinching; she was not a woman who could be pacified with lies.
“My world is a violent one, Chloe,” Tariq said, walking toward her, his movements silent and predatory. “When I intervened this morning, I brought the light of my empire down upon this hospital. That light casts very dark shadows.”
Chloe’s brow furrowed. “Are you saying my mother is in danger?”
“Your mother is in the sub-level intensive care unit. It is protected by biometric access and four of my elite guards. She is entirely secure,” Tariq assured her. “It is you they will target.”
“Me?” Chloe breathed, her heart beginning to pound. “Why would anyone target me? I’m a pediatric nurse! I don't have anything!”
“You have my protection,” Tariq said, his voice dropping into a register of absolute possession. “And to my enemies, that makes you the most valuable target in the hemisphere.”
Malik suddenly entered the lounge, his weapon drawn and held low against his leg, his expression grim. “Sir. Two vehicles have breached the hospital’s perimeter parking. They’ve jammed the local emergency frequencies. They are cutting the primary power transformers in the sub-basement to isolate the building.”
Chloe gasped, jumping to her feet. “The power? My mother’s monitors are on that grid!”
“The surgical wings have dedicated diesel backup generators,” Malik said quickly, looking at Chloe with newfound respect. “They will hold for forty-eight hours. But the elevators and security gates will lock down in ninety seconds.”
Tariq did not hesitate. He moved with a speed that defied his massive frame, grabbing his coat with one hand and wrapping his other arm firmly around Chloe’s waist, pulling her flush against his side.
“We are leaving,” Tariq commanded.
“I can't leave her!” Chloe fought against his grip, her hands pushing against his chest. “I can't leave my mother!”
Tariq looked down into her eyes, his gaze burning with an intensity that silenced her panic. “Listen to me, Chloe. If you stay here, they will use you to destroy everything. If they take you, your mother dies anyway. Trust me. I will keep you alive, and I will bring you back to her. Do you trust me?”
Chloe looked into the dark, fierce eyes of the man who had sheltered her on the plane, the man who had saved her mother without hesitation.
“Yes,” she whispered.
May you like
“Then run,” Tariq said.
