Chapter 7 - The Gathering Storm of Law and Justice

While the Carbone estate enjoyed an afternoon of puzzle-solving and shortbread cookies, the rest of the city was experiencing a seismic collapse.

Federal agents, accompanied by federal marshals and local police units acting on unassailable digital evidence provided by the Carbone security mainframe, descended simultaneously upon Marco Santori’s corporate headquarters downtown and his sprawling residential estate in the hills.

The raid was swift, surgical, and completely devastating.

Santori, clad in an expensive Italian silk bathrobe, was pulled from his mahogany desk by two armed federal agents while media crews—tipped off by anonymous sources within the financial crimes division—swarmed the front gates with flashing camera lenses and rolling microphones.

“Mr. Santori, do you have a comment on the federal racketeering charges?” a reporter shouted over the chaos as handcuffs clicked into place behind his back.

“This is a setup! A corporate hit job!” Santori roared, his face flushed with impotent rage as he glared at the cameras. “Carbone! This is Carbone’s work!”

By evening, the news anchors across every major network were broadcasting the details: millions in laundered funds, forged structural inspection permits linked to the tragic warehouse fire six years prior, and a web of corruption that stretched deep into municipal government offices.

Inside the quiet sanctuary of the Carbone study, the television played the evening news at a low, muted volume in the background.

Dominic sat behind his desk, watching the footage of Marco Santori being led away in handcuffs. His expression remained entirely neutral, untouched by triumph or malice. Business was business; justice was simply the market correcting itself.

Luca Moretti walked into the room, holding a encrypted tablet.

“The DOJ confirmed receipt of the final audit logs,” Luca reported, tossing a physical file onto the desk. “Santori’s assets are being frozen by federal courts as we speak. His shipping contracts are up for grabs on the open market tomorrow morning.”

“Take the primary harbor routes,” Dominic instructed evenly. “Leave the rest for the smaller syndicates. We don't need a monopoly; we need stability.”

“Done,” Luca agreed. He glanced across the room toward the corner where Evie was currently fast asleep on the sofa, exhausted from a long afternoon of coloring and bossing Dominic around. Clara sat nearby, quietly knitting a woolen scarf while keeping watch.

Luca lowered his voice slightly. “You know, Boss... with Santori out of the picture, there’s no immediate threat to the estate. The perimeter can go back to standard rotation.”

Dominic looked over at the sleeping child, then back at Luca.

“Keep the enhanced security on the south wing active,” Dominic said quietly.

Luca raised an eyebrow, a knowing, slightly amused smile playing at the corners of his mouth. “Enhanced security? For the housekeeper and her kid?”

“For my family,” Dominic corrected, his voice leaving no room for argument.

Luca blinked, momentarily taken aback, before a slow, genuine grin spread across his face. He nodded once. “Got it, Boss. South wing stays locked down.”

As Luca turned and left the study, Dominic leaned back in his leather chair. The shadows of the past nineteen years—the burning warehouse, the smoke, the ghosts of a life he had thought irredeemable—seemed farther away than ever.

For the first time in his life, the silence of his study wasn't filled with the ghosts of enemies he had killed or alliances he had broken.

It was filled with the steady, peaceful breathing of a little girl who had walked into a room full of blood and gunpowder, looked a monster in the eye, and taught him how to say I’m sorry.
