Chapter 6 - The Siege of the Forty-Second Floor

The silent alarm didn't ring with bells or sirens; it triggered a synchronized red-alert lockdown across the entire top floor of the Moretti Tower.

Clack-clack-clack.

The heavy steel fire doors dropped instantly into place across the elevator banks and stairwell entrances, sealing the forty-second floor off from the rest of the building like a bank vault.

Julian Vance’s calm, arrogant demeanor shattered instantly. He spun around toward the exit, only to watch the heavy steel shutter lock into place with a definitive, mechanical thud.

“You stupid bitch,” Julian hissed, whipping a compact, suppressed Beretta pistol out from the inside holster of his suit jacket. “You just signed your own death warrant!”

He raised the barrel directly toward Claire’s chest.

Claire didn't flinch. She didn't scream. With the explosive speed of a woman who had trained herself to react to mortal danger decades ago, she grabbed the heavy, solid-brass marble bookend off her desk and hurled it with terrifying accuracy straight at Julian’s wrist.

CRACK!

The heavy brass clipped Julian’s hand squarely. The pistol flew out of his grip, clattering across the polished hardwood floor and sliding under the sofa.

“Get her!” Julian screamed, clutching his bruised wrist and backing away.

The two massive corporate thugs lunged forward around the mahogany desk, their heavy boots thudding against the floorboards.

Claire didn't try to outrun them. Instead, she swept her foot across the floor, catching the edge of her heavy executive chair and sending it spinning directly into the path of the first assailant. The man tripped over the rolling chair, crashing heavily into a glass display shelf filled with corporate awards, shattering crystal and mahogany into a dangerous heap.

The second thug grabbed Claire roughly by the arm, spinning her around and twisting her wrist behind her back with brutal force.

“Gotcha, you fat bitch,” the thug snarled in her ear.

Claire let out a sharp gasp of pain, but instead of submitting, she used her body weight to pivot sharply, driving her heavy heel straight down onto the instep of his polished Italian leather shoe with all her might.

The man howled in agony, his grip slackening for a fraction of a second.

It was all the opening she needed. She ducked under his arm, twisted free, and drove her elbow backward into his solar plexus, doubling him over just as the elevator shaft wall behind them blew inward with an earsplitting roar of tearing metal.

It wasn't an elevator car. It was the private high-speed freight lift—and stepping out of it, weapon in hand, was Vincent Moretti.

His suit jacket was gone, his sleeves rolled up, his face carved out of absolute, murderous rage. Behind him poured four heavily armed private security contractors from the estate’s tactical response unit.

The scene in the office froze in a single microsecond.

Julian Vance stood pale and shaking near the window. The two thugs were nursing their injuries on the floor. And Claire stood in the center of the room, her breath coming in ragged gasps, her hair slightly disheveled, but her head held high.

Vincent’s gray eyes swept the room, taking in the broken glass, the dropped pistol, and Julian Vance’s terrified expression.

“You...” Vincent’s voice dropped into a terrifying, lethal register that made the temperature in the room plummet below freezing. “You brought violence into my building. You laid hands on Claire.”

Julian raised his hands defensively, his voice trembling. “Wait, Vincent—let’s be rational! This is just business! The syndicate still holds leverage over your old shipping routes—"

“The syndicate doesn't exist anymore,” Vincent interrupted softly, taking one slow, deliberate step forward across the room. “You just didn't realize you were already dead.”

Before Julian could draw another breath, Vincent crossed the floor with the blinding speed of a striking apex predator. He didn't use a gun; he grabbed Julian by the lapels of his expensive Italian suit, hoisted him physically off the floor with raw, terrifying brute strength, and slammed him hard against the reinforced glass of the forty-second-floor window.

The glass bowed outward beneath the impact, groaning ominously beneath the weight of the city lights four hundred feet below.

“Mr. Moretti! Please! Don't!” Julian shrieked, clawing frantically at Vincent’s wrists as he stared down at the dizzying drop to the street below.

Vincent held him suspended over the abyss for three agonizing seconds, his face completely devoid of mercy.

Then he hauled Julian back inward, throwing him violently onto the floor at his feet like a discarded sack of garbage.

“Take him down to the sub-basement holding cells,” Vincent ordered without looking back, addressing his tactical team. “Strip him of his assets, freeze every offshore account tied to his name, and make sure he spends the rest of his natural life wishing he had stayed in Zurich.”

“Yes, Mr. Moretti!” the head of security snapped, hauling the whimpering Julian Vance up by his collar and dragging him toward the freight elevator.

As the elevator doors closed, sealing the floor once more, absolute silence descended upon the executive office.

Vincent turned around slowly.

His eyes found Claire standing near her desk. Without a word of corporate small talk, Vincent crossed the room in three strides, grabbed her by the shoulders, and pulled her tightly against his chest, burying his face in her hair.

“Are you hurt?” Vincent demanded, his voice cracking slightly with an emotion he rarely allowed himself to display. “Did they touch you?”

Claire, who had fought off two armed thugs and stared down a syndicate executor without shedding a single tear, suddenly felt her knees go weak against the solid warmth of his body. She wrapped her arms around his waist, burying her face against his broad chest.

“I’m not hurt,” Claire whispered, her voice muffled against his shirt. “Just... just a little shaken up.”

Vincent pulled back just enough to look down into her eyes, his hands resting gently on her arms, his thumb softly brushing away a smudge of dust from her cheek.

“I told you that you wouldn't have to fight alone anymore, Claire,” he murmured, his voice thick with profound devotion. “Why didn't you hit the duress button sooner?”

May you like

“I wanted to see if I could handle them myself first,” Claire offered with a tired, defiant little smirk.

Vincent let out a sudden, rich laugh—the sound rich with relief and absolute adoration. He leaned down, capturing her lips in a deep, fierce, uncompromising kiss that wiped away every shadow of the past twenty years.
