Chapter 7 - Spring Thaw

The spring thaw in Chicago arrived with a sudden, violent burst of rain that washed away the last lingering remnants of winter ice and turned the Lake Michigan shoreline into a swirling expanse of deep, slate-grey water.

At the Mercer estate, the gardens were beginning to bloom with pale green shoots of tulips and crocuses pushing up through the damp earth. For the first time in over a decade, the massive iron gates of the estate remained open during daylight hours, welcoming delivery trucks, visiting executives, and local school buses without the heavy, oppressive paranoia that had once defined Adrian’s life.

On a warm Saturday afternoon in late April, Emily was sitting on the grass beneath the shade of an old oak tree on the back lawn, watching Lily chase a golden retriever puppy that Adrian had recently acquired for the estate.

“Go get it, Lily! Fast!” Emily called out, laughing as the little girl tripped over her own shoelaces, tumbled into the soft grass, and burst into giggles.

Footsteps crunched softly on the gravel path behind her. Adrian walked up, dressed casually in a dark sweater and jeans, holding two glasses of iced lemonade. He handed one down to Emily before lowering himself onto the grass beside her, stretching his long legs out.

“She’s fast,” Adrian noted, watching Lily scoop up the bounding puppy in a fierce, clumsy hug.

“She has entirely too much energy,” Emily sighed happily, taking a sip of the lemonade. “I think she’s making up for all those weeks sitting on the marble steps.”

“She earned her patience,” Adrian said quietly.

They sat in comfortable silence for a long moment, listening to the wind rustling through the newly budded branches of the oak tree. The heavy shadow that had hung over the estate for years—the paranoia, the guarded isolation, the constant fear of betrayal from within—seemed as distant as the winter snow.

“The federal prosecutor’s office called this morning,” Adrian said, breaking the silence. “The preliminary trial dates for Arthur and Victor have been set for early June. Both are expected to plead guilty in exchange for reduced maximum sentences.”

Emily turned her head to look at him. “Are you going to testify?”

“Only if the prosecution needs me to put the final nail in the coffin,” Adrian replied, his voice steady. “Otherwise, my legal team has handed over everything they need. I’m done looking backward, Emily. For the first time in my life, I don't feel the need to audit my own past.”

Emily smiled, her shoulder brushing against his as she shifted slightly on the grass. “It’s amazing what happens when you let the right people into the house.”

Adrian turned his head, his dark eyes meeting hers with a warmth and intensity that made her breath catch slightly in her throat. The corporate titan, the ruthless executive, the phantom of the boardroom—none of those titles applied here. Here, under the spring sun with a laughing child running across the lawn, he was simply Adrian.

“It wasn't just any people, Emily,” Adrian said softly, his voice dropping into a register meant only for her. “It was you.”

Before Emily could formulate a reply, Lily came barreling across the grass, the golden retriever puppy tucked under one arm like an unruly football.

“Mommy! Adrian! Look what Buster did!” Lily announced proudly, holding up a chewed-up gardening glove.

Adrian laughed, sweeping the little girl up into his arms and tossing her gently into the air as Lily squealed with delighted laughter. Emily watched them, her heart overflowing with a peace she had never imagined possible.

The house on the third step was no longer a place of waiting. It was a home.
