Chapter 8 - The Cold Ride

The snow was falling in thick, heavy curtains now, blotting out the lights of the estate and turning the sprawling lawns into a blinding white wasteland.

Elena’s breath plumed in the freezing air as she sprinted across the open courtyard toward the security lodge, her thin uniform shoes crunching loudly against the crusty layer of ice on the pavement.

Crack.

The sharp, unmistakable sound of a gunshot rang out behind her.

A bullet clipped the wooden siding of a nearby decorative trellis, sending white splinters flying into the air.

“There she is! Shoot her legs!” Salvatore’s voice echoed across the courtyard from the rear terrace.

Panic surged through Elena’s veins, giving her a sudden, superhuman burst of speed. She threw herself off the stone walkway just as a second bullet whined overhead, plunging into a snowdrift beside the driveway.

She scrambled behind a thick grove of rhododendron bushes, her hands freezing numb against the snow, her chest burning with every ragged breath.

I have to get to the lodge. I have to protect Mia.

Before she could make a break for the security gate, the blinding beam of headlights cut through the falling snow from the end of the private drive.

A sleek black bulletproof sedan tore through the open iron gates, powersliding gracefully across the icy gravel before coming to a violent, screeching halt directly in front of the main portico.

The rear door flew open instantly.

Adrian Moretti stepped out into the freezing night.

He wasn't wearing his overcoat anymore; his shirt sleeves were rolled up, his dark hair disheveled by the wind, and a heavy Heckler & Koch pistol was already gripped firmly in his right hand.

“Salvatore!” Adrian’s voice boomed across the snowy courtyard with the terrifying force of an avalanche.

The capo, who had been advancing across the lawn with his gun raised toward the rhododendron bushes, froze in his tracks. He turned around, his face draining of all color as he stared at the master of the house standing beneath the porch lights.

“A-Adrian,” Salvatore stammered, lowering his pistol a fraction of an inch. “We were just... we heard a noise, we thought an intruder—”

“You brought weapons into my home,” Adrian said softly, his voice dropping into that lethal, quiet register that promised absolute, unmitigated destruction. “You discharged a firearm on my grounds. And you pursued an unarmed woman through my service wing.”

“She was listening at the study door! She heard the council plans—”

“She is under my personal protection,” Adrian roared, taking three rapid, predatory steps across the snow toward the trembling capo. “Every soul on this estate answers to me. And you just signed your own death warrant.”

Salvatore raised his pistol in a desperate, last-ditch bid for survival, but he was half a second too slow.

Crack. Crack.

Two rapid gunshots echoed through the freezing night air.

Salvatore dropped his weapon as the pistol was shot clean out of his hand, spinning backward into the snow with a howl of pain as a bullet grazed his shoulder. Within three seconds, four armed security guards—loyal veterans commanded by Miller—swarmed out of the shadows, tackling the wounded capo to the ground and disarming his accomplice before they could fire another shot.

Adrian didn't even look down at the writhing traitor.

His dark eyes scanned the snowy lawn frantically until they landed on the dark grove of rhododendron bushes near the driveway.

“Elena!” he called out, his voice cracking with a raw, terrifying panic that no business crisis or syndicate war had ever managed to elicit. “Elena, where are you?!”

Slowly, shivering violently from the freezing cold and the overwhelming shock, Elena crawled out from behind the snow-covered bushes, standing up on shaking legs.

Adrian dropped his weapon, crossed the courtyard in three long strides, and swept her up into his arms, pulling her tightly against his chest as if he never intended to let her go.

“I’m here,” she whispered against his damp shirt, her tears freezing on her cheeks. “I’m here, Adrian. Mia... Mia is still sleeping down in the quarters—”

“She’s safe,” Adrian murmured fiercely, burying his face in her hair, his strong arms trembling around her. “Miller has already secured the entire residential wing. No one will ever touch either of you again. Do you hear me? Never.”

For the first time since the night her husband had died on a freezing highway in Queens, Elena let herself completely fall apart—not because she was weak, but because she finally had someone strong enough to hold the pieces together.
