Chapter 10 - A Home Rebuilt

One year later.

The ballroom of the Moretti estate was once again filled with light, laughter, and the scent of fresh white roses.

Hundreds of pink and gold balloons drifted against the soaring ceilings. The long tables were covered in fine linen, stacked high with artisanal pastries, delicate finger sandwiches, and an enormous four-tiered strawberry cake topped with a sculpted sugar rabbit.

Forty children from the prestigious Saint Ignatius Day School were running across the immaculate Carrara marble, their laughter ringing off the walls like church bells. There were no armed men in sight—at least, none visible to the naked eye. The guards were stationed discreetly beyond the perimeter, their vigilance sharp, but their shadows kept far away from the celebration.

Standing proudly in the center of the northern wall, mounted on the exact same spot where the ruined portrait had hung twelve months ago, was a new painting.

It was an exquisite, hand-painted oil canvas.

In the center sat seven-year-old Lily, glowing with pure joy, wearing a lavender silk dress. But she wasn't alone. Standing behind her, his hand resting securely on her small shoulder, was Luca, dressed in a sharp navy suit, looking at his daughter with unyielding love. And beside Luca, her hand intertwined with his, stood me—wearing a champagne lace gown, a brilliant emerald-cut diamond ring glittering on my fourth finger.

The new Moretti family.

“Hannah! Look! Look what Daddy got me!”

Lily came sprinting across the ballroom floor, skidding slightly in her shiny patent-leather shoes, throwing herself directly into my arms.

I caught her easily, spinning her around as she giggled wildly. My leg was completely healed, leaving only a thin, silver scar across my thigh—a quiet badge of honor that I carried without regret.

“A pony?” I teased, tapping the tip of her nose. “Tell me he didn't buy you a real pony.”

“No!” Lily beamed, holding up an antique gold pocket watch engraved with delicate vines. “It’s Grandma’s watch! Daddy said now that I’m seven, I’m old enough to know what time it is when he’s supposed to be home for dinner!”

From behind us, a pair of strong, familiar arms wrapped around my waist, pulling both of us back against a broad, warm chest.

Luca rested his chin on my shoulder, his lips brushing against my neck, sending a delicious shiver down my spine. “A Moretti is never late for dinner, Lily-bug. Especially when your mother is cooking.”

Lily wrinkled her nose. “Hannah doesn't cook anymore, Daddy. Chef Marco cooks.”

“She cooks when she wants to spoil me,” Luca countered playfully, kissing the crown of Lily’s head before turning his gaze to me.

His eyes were filled with a profound, peaceful warmth that had completely replaced the cold shadow of the mafia Don. He looked at me not just with the passion of a lover, but with the reverence of a man who knew he had been saved from the brink of total ruin.

Across the room, sitting comfortably on a plush velvet sofa, my mother was chatting happily with Dr. Rossi, holding a glass of sparkling cider, her cheeks flushed with health, completely recovered and thriving.

Daniel walked up to Luca, offering a crisp, respectful nod. “Boss. The perimeter is quiet. The port shipments cleared customs without a single hiccup. New York sent their congratulations for Lily’s birthday, along with a pair of antique pearl earrings.”

“Send them a thank-you note,” Luca replied smoothly, not taking his arm from around my waist. “And make sure the drivers take the rest of the evening off. Tonight, we celebrate.”

“Understood, Don Moretti,” Daniel said, his lips twitching into a rare, genuine smile before he stepped back into the crowd.

Lily squirmed out of my embrace, spotting her school friends clustered around the magician near the cake. “Can I go watch the bunny trick? Please?”

“Go on, sweetheart,” I said softly. “Stay where Mrs. Carter can see you.”

Lily planted a quick, sticky kiss on my cheek, then on Luca’s jaw, before sprinting across the marble, her lavender dress fluttering behind her like butterfly wings.

Luca watched her go, his arm tightening gently around my waist, pulling me flush against his side.

“You know,” Luca murmured into my ear, his voice low and seductive, “that huge nursery on the east wing is looking very empty these days.”

I turned in his arms, looping my hands around his neck, looking up into those devastating gray eyes that had once terrified me, but now felt like the safest place on earth.

“Is that an official mafia order, Mr. Moretti?” I whispered, a teasing spark in my eyes.

Luca smiled, that breathtaking, rare smile that belonged only to me.

May you like

“No, Hannah,” Luca whispered, leaning down until his lips hovered a fraction of an inch above mine. “That’s a husband begging his wife to give him another miracle.”

He closed the distance between us, kissing me deeply amidst the laughter of children, the scent of roses, and the warm, golden light of a home that had finally been rebuilt on love, honor, and an unbreakable bond.
