Chapter 8 - The Syndicate’s New Code

The restructuring of my household was only the first ripple in a much larger transformation across the entire Moretti organization.

If my own home had been vulnerable to internal rot, corruption, and systemic cruelty, what was happening in the outer rings of my syndicate?

On a rainy Monday evening, I called an emergency summit at my primary downtown headquarters—a high-rise executive penthouse overlooking the glowing Chicago skyline.

Seated around the massive mahogany conference table were my six highest-ranking capos, regional enforcers, and business advisors. They looked uneasy, whispering among themselves, wondering what kind of purge was coming after the Evelyn Crane scandal and the downfall of the Vanguard Syndicate.

I walked into the room at exactly 8:00 PM, carrying no files, no weapons, and no paperwork.

I sat down at the head of the table, leaned back, and looked around the room, meeting the eyes of each hardened killer and ruthless businessman sitting before me.

"For twenty years," I began, my voice cutting cleanly through the murmur of the room, "this syndicate has operated on a simple rule: loyalty bought with cash, enforced by fear."

Silence descended instantly. No one dared to breathe.

"We tracked our enemies across state lines, we crushed our competitors, and we built an empire on blood and muscle," I continued, resting my hands flat on the table. "We believed that as long as our outer perimeter was fortified, nothing inside our walls could touch us."

I paused, letting my gaze sweep over Viktor Petrov’s former associates who had recently sworn allegiance to my banner.

"We were wrong," I said quietly. "We spent so much time looking outward for threats that we allowed rot to take root inside our own kitchens. We allowed greed, petty tyranny, and cruelty to fester among the people we trusted most."

Vince, my veteran capo who controlled the south-side shipping docks, shifted uncomfortably in his seat. "Boss, are you saying we’re changing how we run the territories?"

"I am saying we are raising the standard," I replied firmly. "From tonight onward, the Moretti syndicate operates under a new code. Extortion of the vulnerable, targeting of families, and internal exploitation of the defenseless end tonight. Anyone in this room—or working under your command—who preys on those who cannot fight back will answer directly to me."

A heavy, stunned silence filled the room. In the brutal underworld of Chicago, talking about morals and protecting the vulnerable sounded like weakness.

But nobody in that room dared to call it weakness. They remembered the raid on the Vanguard plant. They remembered what happened to Marcus Vance and Richard Vance.

Vince slowly nodded his head. "Understood, Boss. The new code stands."

One by one, the other capos nodded in agreement. The philosophy of the syndicate was shifting from simple, brutal survival to absolute, unshakable accountability.
