Chapter 9 - Shadows and Silk

Inside the private study of the Castello estate a week later, the heavy mahogany doors were shut tight against the bustling world outside.

The utility sink in the basement was locked up, its harsh chemical bottles permanently thrown into a hazardous waste disposal unit. In its place, the third-floor suite had been converted into a sunlit sanctuary of cream silk, rich mahogany bookshelves, and massive floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the river.

Sadi sat at a sleek oak writing desk, reviewing the financial allocations for the newly established Castello-Hayes Medical Trust, her hands now completely healed, resting softly against the polished wood.

The heavy door clicked open.

Footsteps fell silently across the thick Persian rug. A moment later, the familiar, clean scent of cedarwood and expensive bourbon filled the air, followed by the gentle weight of a warm wool jacket settling over her shoulders.

Victor didn't speak immediately. He stood behind her, his large hands resting lightly on the back of her chair, his dark slate-gray eyes reflecting the golden light of the setting sun outside.

“The board of trustees just approved the final endowment for the pediatric wing,” Victor said quietly, his voice smooth as velvet. “Your brother’s doctors say he’s responding to the new therapy three times faster than expected.”

Sadi didn't turn around right away. She reached up, her fingers lightly brushing against the fabric of the jacket Victor had placed on her.

“Do you think they realize yet?” she asked softly, a faint, wry smile touching her lips. “That we aren't hiding anymore?”

Victor walked around the chair and knelt down on one knee, mirroring the exact position of protection and absolute devotion. He took her hands in his, his thumbs tracing the smooth, flawless skin of her knuckles where the chemical scars had finally faded into memory.

“Let them wonder,” Victor replied, his expression deadly serious, though a flicker of warmth danced in his gaze. “For eight months, you carried the weight of the world on those cracked hands, Sadi. You thought you were invisible. But I saw you every single day.”

Sadi leaned forward, cupping his jaw with her palm, feeling the hard, unyielding line of his cheekbone. The phantom ache of poverty, fear, and debt that had haunted her bones for years finally faded into nothingness.

“Then let’s leave the past behind us,” she whispered. “No more ghosts. Just us.”

Victor smiled—a rare, devastating expression that completely transformed the dangerous mafia king into a man deeply, fiercely in love.

“Done,” he murmured, pressing his lips gently against her palm.
