Chapter 5 - THE PROMISE MADE IN THE DARK

Thirty minutes later, the grand dining room was quiet once more.

The heavy oak doors clicked open, and Julian stepped inside. His suit jacket was unbuttoned, his hands clean, the tactical weapon safely stowed away.

Grace was sitting rigidly at the edge of the mahogany table. Amara had fallen asleep, her head resting softly against Grace’s shoulder, her little fingers still clutching her stuffed rabbit with the missing ear.

When Grace heard the door open, she jumped up, her face pale, her eyes darting frantically across Julian’s face, searching for blood, for injury, for a verdict.

“Mr. Hale…?” she whispered, her voice trembling. “Did… did he…?”

Julian walked slowly over to them. The terrifying aura of the mafia boss had vanished, replaced by something grounded, exhausted, and profoundly human.

“Marcus has been dealt with,” Julian said quietly, keeping his voice low so as not to wake the child. “He will never threaten you, or anyone else, ever again.”

Grace let out a long, shuddering gasp—a sound so full of leaked trauma, grief, and released terror that it seemed to pull the remaining tension right out of the room. Her knees buckled slightly, and she had to grip the back of the chair to steady herself.

“Thank you,” she sobbed softly, fresh tears streaming down her face. “Thank you, Mr. Hale… God bless you…”

Julian looked down at Amara, who stirred slightly in her sleep, letting out a soft, contented sigh.

He reached out, his large, calloused hand gently brushing a stray curl away from the little girl’s forehead. The touch was tender—so gentle it felt foreign to his own hands.

“You don't need to work the night shifts anymore, Grace,” Julian said quietly.

Grace looked up, startled. “Sir?”

“Your husband was an honest man who died because he tried to do the right thing,” Julian continued, his slate-gray eyes meeting hers with absolute resolve. “You and Amara are under the personal protection of the Hale family from this moment forward. I’m setting up a trust fund in your daughter’s name that will cover her education through university, and the guest cottage behind the eastern gardens is yours, rent-free, for as long as you want to stay.”

Grace stared at him in utter disbelief. “Mr. Hale… I… I can’t accept all that charity—I’m just a housekeeper—!”

“You’re not a housekeeper anymore, Grace,” Julian said softly, offering a faint, ghost of a smile that transformed his sharp features. “You’re family now.”

He reached down, taking the remaining half of the warm dinner roll from Amara’s abandoned plate, and placed it neatly beside his own napkin.

The giant dining room was still enormous. The crystal chandelier still cast cold white light across the marble floor. The twenty-seat table was still mostly empty.

But as Julian sat back down in his high-backed velvet chair, looking over at the small, peaceful child sleeping beside him, the silence didn't feel quite so cold anymore.

For the first time in two years, Julian Hale didn't eat alone.
