Chapter 5 - Confrontation in the Dark

“Why did you believe her, Graham?” I asked, wiping my face with the sleeve of my sweater, looking directly at him. “You’re supposed to be one of the sharpest venture capitalists on the eastern seaboard. Vanessa couldn't read a financial prospectus if her life depended on it. How did you think she was running my father's firm?”

Graham closed his eyes, a muscle ticking in his jaw.

“Because every time I asked to look into the Vance legacy archives, Vanessa showed me your alleged confessions,” he said, his voice laced with bitter self-recrimination. “She showed me forged emails from you, begging for cash, threatening to sell family trade secrets. She painted you as a ruthless, narcissistic sociopath who abandoned her baby's father and stole from her dying patriarch.”

He looked up, meeting my gaze.

“And there was something else,” Graham said quietly.

“What?”

“Seven years ago, before your father died... do you remember the maritime port automation proposal submitted to the Ellison Group?”

My heart skipped a beat. “Of course I do. I spent nine months designing that logistical software. It was my master’s thesis. I handed it to my father the week before he fell ill.”

“Vanessa presented that proposal to our board three years ago,” Graham revealed, the disgust evident in his tone. “She claimed she had spent years quietly finishing her late father’s vision. She used your software, Clara. It revolutionized our secondary freight terminals. I fell in love with the mind behind that proposal. I thought... God help me, I thought Vanessa was a visionary who had clawed her way out of family tragedy.”

A humorless laugh escaped my lips. “She never wrote a single line of code in her life. She used to pay high schoolers to write her book reports.”

“I know that now,” Graham said. “An hour ago, our forensic team analyzed the root metadata of the original system files stored on the server Lily unlocked. Every line of code bears your developer timestamp, Clara. Every single one.”

Before I could respond, Graham’s phone began to vibrate violently against the glass table.

The caller ID flashed: *Eleanor Vance*.

Graham didn’t pick it up. Instead, he swiped to speakerphone.

“Graham!” Eleanor’s shrill, panicked voice cut into the room. “Graham, thank God. Vanessa has locked herself in the bathroom with a bottle of sleeping pills! You have to come to the penthouse! You have to stop this madness!”

Graham’s expression did not change. It remained as cold and unyielding as granite.

“Call an ambulance, Eleanor,” Graham said flatly.

“Graham, listen to me!” Eleanor cried out, losing her composed façade entirely. “Clara is setting us up! That video was doctored by her tech friends! She’s trying to destroy your social standing! If you pursue this, we will drag the Ellison name through every tabloid in the country! We will say you abused Vanessa behind closed doors! We will burn everything down!”

“You are welcome to try,” Graham replied calmly. “Because while you were driving back to your penthouse, two federal agents and my corporate legal counsel were dispatched to your residence with a preservation of evidence warrant.”

There was an abrupt, choking silence on the other end of the line.

“You... you wouldn’t,” Eleanor whispered, her voice trembling.

“Thomas Vance’s true journal is currently in the hands of the U.S. Attorney,” Graham said, his voice dropping an octave into absolute finality. “And tomorrow morning, every financial asset tied to Vance Consulting under your and Vanessa’s names will be frozen pending a grand jury inquiry for wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, and criminal perjury.”

“Graham, please—”

Graham tapped the red icon. The call disconnected.

The suite returned to silence.

Graham stood up. He walked over to the coat rack, retrieving his overcoat. He paused, turning back toward me.

“Get some rest, Clara,” he said softly. “You and Lily are safe here. My personal security detail is stationed outside the door. Tomorrow, the world will learn the truth. I swear it to you.”
