Chapter 6 - The Trap Snaps Shut

By Wednesday afternoon, the financial shockwaves orchestrated by Arthur had detonated across the city’s upper crust.

Senator Ward had announced an abrupt, indefinite "leave of absence for personal family matters," while his son Marcus was officially named as a person of interest in a criminal investigation launched by the District Attorney’s office. Cousin Gregory’s office at Vance Logistics had been cleared out by building security before lunchtime, his executive parking pass revoked and his accounts frozen.

In the penthouse suite of the Grand Sovereign Hotel in the city’s financial district, Julian Thorne stood before a wall of floor-to-ceiling windows, staring down at the harbor below. His face was gray, the sharp arrogance that usually defined his features eroded by sheer panic.

Across the room, Evelyn Vance paced like a caged animal, clutching an empty cocktail glass.

"He knows," Evelyn hissed, her voice jagged and high. "I told you he would know! Arthur isn't a man, Julian; he's a machine! He threw me out with one suitcase! My bank cards were declined at the train station! I had to take a common cab to get to this hotel!"

"Shut up, Evelyn," Thorne snarled without turning around. "Your incompetence is what caused this. You were supposed to secure the boy quietly. You were supposed to have the social workers already at the gate when Arthur arrived, not a damn garden party with your useless relatives filming the abuse like amateurs!"

"Marcus promised me the footage would be airtight!" she shrieked. "He said Arthur wouldn't be back until Wednesday night!"

"Marcus is a moron," Thorne spat, turning around to reveal bloodshot, sleepless eyes. "The Swiss Union Bank called me two hours ago. My debt covenants have been triggered. Arthur canceled the Baltic dry bulk contracts. Every ship I own is idling in the North Sea, hemorrhaging half a million dollars a day! If I don't raise eighty million dollars in cash by Friday morning, the receivers will take my entire fleet!"

The suite door chimed.

Thorne straightened his tie, signaling to his private security guard to open it.

Harold Sterling, the prominent corporate attorney who had dropped Evelyn forty-eight hours prior, stepped into the suite. He looked disheveled, his expensive overcoat damp from the afternoon drizzle.

"Why are you here, Harold?" Evelyn demanded, stepping forward. "You abandoned me!"

"I am here because Arthur Vance sent me," Sterling said flatly, ignoring Evelyn completely and addressing Thorne.

Thorne stiffened. "Arthur sent you?"

Sterling drew a single cream-colored envelope from his pocket and laid it on the glass coffee table between them.

"Mr. Vance invites both of you to dinner tonight. Eight o'clock. The private dining room at the Sovereign Club."

Evelyn gasped, stepping back as if the envelope contained a venomous snake. "A dinner? It’s an execution! He’s going to have us arrested publicly!"

"There are no police involved in this invitation," Sterling replied smoothly. "Mr. Vance stated that he wishes to discuss the terms of a structured settlement. He is willing to purchase Thorne Maritime's distressed debt at par value, provided that all pending legal claims, proxy challenges, and family trust disputes are resolved tonight. In person."

Thorne’s eyes narrowed, a desperate spark of hope igniting in his chest. "He’s willing to buy out my debt? At par value?"

"That is what he instructed me to communicate," Sterling said. "However, the offer is contingent on one condition: Miss Vance must attend, and you must bring the master hard drive containing the private server backup of Marcus Ward’s raw footage."

"Why does he want the drive?" Evelyn asked, suspicion tightening her throat. "He already has his own security footage."

"Mr. Vance does not leave copies of his family's affairs in the hands of strangers," Sterling said coldly. "Eight o'clock. If you are five minutes late, the offer is permanently withdrawn, and the bankruptcy filings against Thorne Capital proceed tomorrow morning."

Sterling gave a curt nod and left the suite, leaving the heavy silence of desperate people clinging to a lifeline.

Thorne looked at the envelope, then at Evelyn.

"We go," Thorne stated.

"Julian, you don't know him like I do," Evelyn cried, clutching her arms around herself. "Arthur never settles. He never forgives. When Arthur invites you to dinner, you are not the guest. You are the meal."

May you like

"Do I have a choice?" Thorne roared, slamming his fist onto the marble counter. "If I don't sign that debt relief agreement tonight, I am ruined! I will be living in a rented flat within thirty days! We take the drive, we hand it over, we sign his documents, and we take his money. Whatever pride you have left, Evelyn, bury it. Tonight, we crawl if he asks us to."
