Chapter 7 - The First Snow in Lake Forest

Moments later, the entire household—Clara, myself, Ethan, and the four girls—stepped out onto the grand stone terrace overlooking the massive rear gardens of the Lake Forest estate.

It was late November, and overnight, Chicago had experienced its very first genuine snowfall of the season.

The sprawling lawns, the towering oak trees, and the formal stone fountains were draped in a thick, pristine blanket of powdery white. The air was crisp, biting, and smelled of cold pine and winter promise.

The four girls let out a collective shriek of pure, unadulterated delight and bolted down the stone steps into the snow, their colorful winter coats splashing vibrant hues of red, pink, and yellow against the monochromatic landscape.

Ethan hesitated for half a second, glanced back at me with a questioning grin, and then sprinted after them, scooping up a handful of snow and launching a clumsy, harmless snowball in the direction of nine-year-old Chloe, who immediately shrieked and retaliated with deadly precision.

Clara and I stood side by side on the elevated terrace, watching the absolute chaos unfold below us.

A quiet, genuine smile broke across Clara’s face—a smile so radiant and unburdened that it momentarily eclipsed the stark beauty of the winter morning. She wrapped her arms around herself to ward off the chill, exhaling a long plume of visible white breath into the freezing air.

“I haven't seen them smile like that in three years,” Clara whispered, her voice thick with emotion. “Ever since their father passed... our lives have just been one long series of survival drills. I forgot what happiness looked like on them.”

I turned my head, looking down at her profile. The golden morning light reflected off the fine dusting of snow, illuminating her hazel eyes with a warm, crystalline brilliance.

“They’re safe now, Clara,” I said, my voice dropping into a low, rumbling cadence that only she could hear. “And so are you.”

She turned her face toward mine, stopping just inches away. The distance between us vanished until the cold air around us felt suddenly, intensely hot.

“You built this huge, terrifying fortress to keep the world out, Alexander,” Clara murmured, her gaze dropping briefly to my lips before rising back to my eyes. “And yet, you let us right in through the front door.”

“You didn't come in through the front door,” I replied, a slow, possessive warmth spreading through my chest. “You crawled in beneath my table when I wasn't looking. And I have no intention of ever letting you leave.”

Clara let out a soft, breathless laugh, her hand reaching out tentatively to rest against the lapel of my heavy wool coat, her fingers curling into the fabric just like Zoe had done the day before.

“Is that an order, Mr. Hayes?” she teased, her eyes sparkling with a playful, dangerous light.

May you like

“It’s a permanent injunction,” I murmured, leaning down and capturing her lips in a deep, deliberate kiss that sealed our fates forever.

Around us, the snow fell silently over the sprawling estate, blanketing the past in white, while five children laughed and threw snowballs across the lawn, completely unaware—and entirely unconcerned—that they had just captured the most feared man in Chicago without firing a single shot.
