Chapter 10 - The Dawn and the Promise

The heavy front door clicked shut.

Rafael let out a long, slow breath, lowering the Beretta and slipping it back into the holster beneath his coat. He stood alone in the center of the foyer for a moment, listening to the ticking of the grandfather clock, before turning toward the dark hallway leading to the kitchens.

“Sofia,” he called out, his voice softening just a fraction.

The pantry door creaked open. Sofia stepped out into the hallway, her face pale, her hands clasped tightly in front of her. Behind her skirt peeked Emma, clutching the calico cat in her arms like a furry shield.

“Are they... are they gone?” Sofia asked, her voice shaking despite her best efforts to keep it steady.

“They’re gone,” Rafael said, walking toward them. He stopped two feet away, looking down at the little girl. He slowly pulled off his left glove, folding it neatly and placing it in his coat pocket. For the first time in front of both of them, his bare hand was exposed—the thin white scar visible against his skin.

He knelt down on one knee, ignoring the dust on the marble floor, until he was eye-level with Emma.

“You dropped your red boot yesterday by the carriage house, Emma,” Rafael said, a faint, rare smile touching the corners of his mouth. “I think it’s time we went and found it.”

Emma blinked her wide, dark eyes, looked up at her mother, and then back at the man who commanded the underworld yet knew where her missing boot was buried in the mud. She slowly let go of the cat, stepped forward, and wrapped her small arms around Rafael’s neck, burying her face against his wool shoulder.

Rafael froze for a microsecond—the hardened boss, the ghost of the New York underworld, the man who hadn't let anyone touch him without a barrier in decades. Then, slowly, his bare arms came up, circling the child’s small back, holding her securely against him.

Sofia watched them, standing under the grand crystal chandelier as the evening shadows finally retreated before the rising moonlight. The war was over. The debt was paid. And in the quiet stone house by the sea, a new life was finally beginning.
