Chapter 6 - The Glass Shatters

The backup generators hummed to life three seconds later, bathing the grand ballroom in an eerie, pulsing red emergency glow.

But in those three seconds of absolute darkness, the rules of civilized society had evaporated.

From the vaulted glass ceiling above the mezzanine, shattering safety glass rained down like jagged diamonds as four masked figures dressed in tactical black rappelled into the room, automatic weapons raised and trained directly on the center of the floor.

“Nobody move!” a harsh voice bellowed through a voice modulator. “Hands on your heads! Drop your phones!”

Panic exploded. Screams echoed off the marble pillars as socialites, billionaires, and politicians scrambled in blind terror, diving behind mahogany tables and heavy velvet drapes.

Caitlyn’s heart hammered against her ribs, her breath catching in her throat. Her survival instincts—honed by years of navigating chaotic corporate environments and street-level debt collectors—kicked in instantly.

She looked toward Julian Thorne’s previous location. The billionaire coward had already scrambled behind the heavy mahogany bar, dragging a terrified European investor down with him.

But Deari Hamilton didn't flinch.

He didn't dive behind a table. He didn't raise his hands.

With blinding, terrifying speed, Deari grabbed Caitlyn by the wrist, pulling her low behind a thick, marble-clad structural column just as a burst of automatic gunfire chewed up the air where they had been standing a second prior.

Rat-tat-tat-tat!

Wood splinters and plaster dust exploded into the air.

“Stay down,” Deari ordered, his voice terrifyingly calm, devoid of panic. His dark eyes burned with lethal focus as he reached inside his tailored tuxedo jacket and drew a sleek, matte-black Glock 19 with suppressor attached.

“Who are they?” Caitlyn hissed, pressing her back against the cool marble, her mind racing a mile a minute. “Thorne’s men? Or Russian syndicates retaliating for the Zurich routing?”

“Does it matter?” Deari murmured, checking the magazine slide with a practiced click. “They brought a firefight into my evening. That makes them my property.”

Across the ballroom, two of the tactical mercenaries advanced toward the structural column, their weapon barrels sweeping the floor, searching for targets.

“Boss!” a deep, gravelly voice crackled through the encrypted earpiece hidden inside Deari’s ear. It was Luigi. “Perimeter breached! We have six hostiles in the main foyer, four on the balcony. They’re trying to pin you against the glass!”

“Hold the foyer, Luigi,” Deari muttered into his collar mic. “Leave the balcony squad to me.”

Before Caitlyn could process what he meant, Deari moved with the terrifying fluid grace of a predator unleashed. He stepped out from behind the marble column, raised his weapon, and fired twice.

Puff. Puff.

Two muffled, concussive reports.

Across the ballroom, the two advancing mercenaries dropped instantly, their tactical vests absorbing the precise, center-mass kinetic impact as they collapsed onto the Persian rug.

The remaining two gunmen on the mezzanine whirled around, shouting frantic orders in Russian, bringing their assault rifles to bear on Deari.

“Deari, look out!” Caitlyn screamed, her maternal, protective instinct overriding her terror.

Without thinking, driven by pure survival and adrenaline, Caitlyn spotted a heavy, crystal champagne bottle resting on an abandoned cocktail table three feet away. With zero hesitation, she lunged forward, grabbed the heavy crystal bottle, and hurled it with vicious, uncalculated accuracy directly at the face of the nearest gunman leaning over the balcony railing.

Clang!

The heavy crystal shattered across the mercenary’s tactical helmet, blinding him instantly and causing him to stumble backward over the railing.

Bang! ⚽️

Deari didn't miss a beat. His Glock snapped upward, taking out the second gunman with a clean, surgical headshot through the mezzanine balustrade.

The entire firefight had lasted less than twelve seconds.

Silence descended upon the bullet-riddled ballroom, broken only by the distant wail of police sirens approaching from the coastal highway and the terrified whimpering of Julian Thorne hiding behind the bar.

Deari lowered his weapon, the barrel still smoking slightly in the red emergency light. He slowly turned his head, looking down at Caitlyn, who was standing frozen amidst the scattered crystal shards and plaster dust, her designer gown slightly torn at the hem, her chest heaving with adrenaline.

For a long moment, neither of them spoke.

Then, a slow, breathtaking smile broke across Deari Hamilton’s face—a genuine, unmasked expression of sheer, dangerous exhilaration.

“Remind me, Miss Elmore,” Deari said, his voice dropping into a dark, rich purr as he stepped closer, gently brushing a stray lock of hair away from her damp forehead. “Are you certain your only qualification is handling corporate spreadsheets?”

Caitlyn looked up at him, her pulse racing, her knees shaking from the sudden crash of adrenaline.

“I’m full of surprises, Mr. Hamilton,” she whispered, her chin lifting defiantly.

Deari’s dark eyes burned down into hers. Without warning, he reached out, pulled her flush against his solid chest, and lowered his head, pressing his lips firmly, passionately against hers in a breathtaking, fierce kiss that tasted of gunpowder, danger, and absolute conquest.
