Chapter 5 - The Phantom Ledger

By eight o’clock that morning, the library of the Westchester estate had been converted into a command center. Four high-speed monitors displayed live market feeds, banking transactions, and security feeds from Caldwell Global Headquarters in Midtown.
Grace sat behind the massive mahogany desk, her fingers flying across an encrypted mechanical keyboard. She had showered, dressed in a sharp charcoal-gray designer pantsuit Mrs. Gable had procured, and pulled her hair back into an elegant, commanding French twist. She looked every inch the world-class forensic auditor she was.
Ethan stood beside her, drinking black coffee, studying the documents emerging from a secure laser printer.
“Look at this,” Grace said, tapping a section of the screen displaying the secondary routing transit numbers from Ashford Consulting. “The four point eight million from the foundation wasn't the goal. It was a decoy.”
Ethan set his coffee cup down. “Explain.”
“Victoria’s embezzlement was sloppy on purpose,” Grace said, pulling up three interconnected offshore ledgers. “Richard Ashford knew we were auditing the Caldwell Foundation. He intentionally allowed Victoria to leave breadcrumbs linking to Ashford Consulting so that if an audit occurred, the scandal would look like a simple domestic dispute—a spoiled fiancée dipping into charity funds.”
“To distract from something far larger,” Ethan deduced, his eyes narrowing.
“Exactly,” Grace said, highlighting a dormant transaction line that routed through a subsidiary named *Vance Oceanic Logistics*. “While everyone’s attention was fixed on the foundation scandal, Bradley Vance authorized a wire transfer of one hundred and twenty million dollars from Caldwell Global’s primary liquidity reserve into an offshore account in the Cook Islands.”
Ethan leaned over her shoulder, his chest pressing lightly against her back, his eyes scanning the numbers. “That money was earmarked for the acquisition of the transatlantic green-freight corridor. If that capital vanishes, Caldwell Global defaults on its covenant with the European Union, the stock crashes forty percent, and Vance can trigger a hostile takeover through his shell consortium.”
“And look who the authorized signatory is on the receiving account,” Grace whispered, hitting the enter key.
A scanned signature appeared on the center monitor. It was Richard Ashford’s personal seal, countersigned by Bradley Vance.
“They didn't just break Ashford out of police custody to save him,” Grace said, turning in her chair to look up at Ethan. “They broke him out because he’s the only one who holds the biometric encryption key to unlock that one hundred and twenty million dollars. The funds settle at ten o’clock this morning. If the transfer completes, Caldwell Global is gutted, and Richard Ashford disappears to a non-extradition country with Vance’s blessing.”
Ethan straightened up, a cold, predatory smile spreading across his face. “They think I’m hiding out here, licking my wounds, waiting for the lawyers to negotiate a severance package.”
“They think I’m an terrified maid who ran away into the night,” Grace added, a fierce spark igniting in her brown eyes.
“Marcus!” Ethan called out toward the library door.
Marcus appeared instantly, fully geared in a dark tactical suit. “Sir?”
“Prepare the helicopter,” Ethan ordered. “We’re landing on the roof of Caldwell Tower in forty-five minutes. Inform our legal team and the head of the SEC Enforcement Division to be on standby on line one.”
Marcus grinned. “Understood, boss.”
Grace stood up, smoothing the front of her jacket. She looked at Ethan, her chin held high, the bruise on her cheek now covered with subtle, skilled makeup, leaving only an aura of absolute determination.
“Dr. Miller,” Ethan said, offering his arm with an aristocratic elegance that contrasted sharply with the dangerous glint in his eyes. “Shall we attend a board meeting?”
May you like
“Mr. Caldwell,” Grace replied, slipping her arm through his. “Let’s balance the ledger.”
