Chapter 8 - The Boardroom Coup

The executive boardroom on the forty-second floor of Kane Global Tower smelled of expensive cigar smoke, fresh leather, and imminent victory.

Floor-to-ceiling windows offered a panoramic view of the Chicago skyline, where the morning sun was burning off the last remnants of the lake fog. Around the mahogany conference table sat twenty-two senior directors, regional capos, and corporate vice presidents—all of them wearing expensive suits, all of them waiting for the gavel to drop.

At the head of the table sat Sterling Kane.

He wore a custom charcoal-gray suit, his silver silk tie neatly knotted beneath a crisp white collar. He was tapping a gold fountain pen against the polished wood, looking every bit like a man who had finally inherited an empire.

“Gentlemen,” Sterling said, his voice smooth and resonant as he cleared his throat. “As you know, my cousin Everett has been incapacitated for eight months following a tragic... medical event. Under the emergency provisions of the Kane Family Trust, effective ten o'clock this morning, operational control of all shipping, real estate, and financial assets reverts entirely to the executive committee chaired by myself.”

A murmur of polite agreement moved around the table. Several men nodded, raising their coffee cups in quiet celebration of a bloodless coup.

“I have the final proxy transfer documents right here,” Sterling continued, sliding a thick leather folder across the table toward the corporate secretary. “Once signed and notarized—”

The heavy double doors at the far end of the boardroom didn't just open.

They blew wide open, crashing against the oak paneling with a force that made every man at the table jump out of his seat.

A dead, suffocating silence fell over the room.

Walking down the center aisle of the boardroom was Everett Kane.

He wore a dark charcoal overcoat over his tailored suit, his silver-streaked dark hair combed back, his posture as rigid and commanding as a granite monument. Behind him walked Willa Hayes, dressed in a sharp, slate-gray blazer and pencil skirt, carrying a heavy leather briefcase containing the master encryption keys and the spiral notebook.

Sterling’s fountain pen slipped from his fingers, rolling across the mahogany table before clattering onto the floor.

Color drained entirely from Sterling’s face. He stood up so fast his chair screeched against the marble floor.

“E-Everett?” Sterling stammered, his voice cracking like a breaking twig. “That’s... that’s impossible. You’re in a coma. Dr. Whitfield said—'”

“Dr. Whitfield lied,” Everett said. His voice cut through the cavernous boardroom like a razor blade, freezing every man in his chair.

Everett stopped at the head of the table, planting his large hands firmly on the polished wood, leaning forward until his face was inches from Sterling’s trembling eyes.

“You’ve been busy running my company into the ground, cousin,” Everett said quietly. “Moving offshore funds, cutting side deals with federal contractors, and trying to murder your own flesh and blood with veterinary sedatives.”

Sterling’s hands shook uncontrollably. He looked around the table for support, but the hardened capos and directors who had cheered for him five minutes earlier were now staring firmly down at their blotters, suddenly finding their coffee cups fascinating. They knew the look in Everett Kane’s eyes. It was the look of a man who didn't just take back his business—he took back his pound of flesh.

“Security!” Sterling screamed, his voice pitching high with panic. “Get them out of here! Call building security—now!”

The boardroom doors remained shut. No one came.

From the hallway outside, heavy, disciplined footsteps echoed. Three federal marshals, accompanied by two armed internal revenue agents, stepped past the open doors and lined the perimeter of the room.

Behind them walked Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah Linden, holding an open arrest warrant.

“Sterling Kane,” ADA Linden said clearly, her voice echoing off the glass walls. “You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, conspiracy to commit murder, and interstate racketeering. Put your hands behind your back.”
