Chapter 4 - THE CELL AND THE SILENCE

One month later.
The Denver Women's Correctional Facility was a bleak concrete structure tucked away in the industrial district, far removed from the luxury boutiques and country clubs Vanessa Vale had once frequented.
I sat in a small, private visitation room, separated by a thick acrylic glass partition.
The door on the opposite side creaked open, and two female guards escorted Vanessa Vale into the room.
She was wearing an oversized orange jumpsuit that swallowed her thin frame. Her signature long, styled hair had been cut short to her shoulders, unwashed and dull. Her pristine complexion was pale, devoid of makeup, and her hands were bound in heavy steel handcuffs attached to a waist chain.
She sat down heavily in the metal chair, glaring at me through the glass with pure, concentrated venom.
She picked up the plastic telephone receiver.
I picked up mine, holding it calmly against my ear.
"Come to gloat?" Vanessa spat out, her voice raspy, stripped of its former high-society polish. "Come to see what you did to me?"
"I didn't do anything to you, Vanessa," I replied, my tone flat and measured. "You did this to yourself the moment you put your heel on a five-year-old child's hand."
Vanessa laughed bitterly, a dry, hollow sound. "That brat ruined my life! Grant promised me I’d be the mistress of that estate! He promised me we'd sell off your grandfather’s company and move to Europe once your divorce was finalized!"
"Grant was a liar who was living on my allowance," I said. "And you were a parasite who didn't bother to check who actually owned the blood you were drinking."
Vanessa slammed her handcuffed fists against the ledge below the glass, making the metal chains rattle violently. "I’m looking at twenty years, Evelyn! Twenty years! For what?! A few bruises on a kid who couldn't even talk?!"
"That 'kid' is my daughter," I said, leaning closer to the glass, my eyes burning with a cold, terrifying light that made Vanessa flinch back. "And those bruises were documented by three federal forensic experts. The district attorney added charges of felony child torture, unlawful imprisonment, and conspiracy to commit wire fraud. Your brother flipped on you yesterday morning to save himself from a thirty-year sentence."
Vanessa’s breath hitched. "Jeremy... flipped?"
"He gave the prosecutors every text message, every email, and every bank transfer between you and Grant," I revealed smoothly. "You were the one who planned the Cayman route. You were the one who pushed Grant to transfer the funds. You were the mastermind, Vanessa. And the state is going to make an example out of you."
Vanessa began to shake, real, unadulterated terror finally breaking through her stubborn pride. Tears of panic spilled down her pale cheeks, leaving tracks through the grime on her face.
"Evelyn... please..." Vanessa whimpered, pressing her hands against the glass in a desperate gesture of surrender. "I’m sorry... I swear to God I’m sorry! I’ll plead guilty! I’ll testify against Grant! Just talk to the prosecutor... ask them to lower the mandatory minimum... I can't survive twenty years in here!"
I looked at the woman who had sat on my sofa in my husband’s robe, drinking champagne while my child cowered in the dirt at her feet.
"You told my daughter she was a mute little burden," I said softly, my voice dropping into a deadly whisper. "You told her that nobody cared about her voice."
I stood up from my chair, holding the telephone receiver tightly in my hand.
"Now you get to spend the next two decades in a concrete box," I said, "where nobody will ever care about yours."
May you like
I hung up the telephone, setting it back on its metal hook.
Vanessa screamed, pounding her chained hands against the thick glass, her desperate pleas completely silenced by the soundproof barrier as the guards dragged her backward through the heavy iron door, locking her away from the world forever.
