Chapter 9 - The New Empire

Spring came to Boston with a rush of emerald green and warm, salt-scented breezes that swept across the harbor and chased away the lingering chill of winter.
The wedding was not a public spectacle reported in the gossip columns or trade journals. It was private, intimate, and profoundly sacred. Held in the sunlit glass conservatory of the Torino estate, surrounded by blooming orchids and cascading ivy, the ceremony was attended by exactly four people: Gianna, who stood proudly as Mave’s maid of honor; Dante, who served as Rafe’s best man and proudly handed over the velvet ring box; Mrs. Gallo, who wept openly into a lace handkerchief; and Finn, resplendent in a miniature tailored suit, holding a velvet pillow with a solemnity that rivaled a Supreme Court justice.
When Rafe slipped the platinum band onto Mave’s finger and kissed her — gently, passionately, with a lifetime of fierce devotion behind it — the applause that erupted from Dante and Finn echoed happily off the glass panes.
Life in the Colazo-Torino household shifted into a rhythm of peace Mave had never thought possible.
The hospital bills were a distant memory, replaced by Dr. Aris's glowing medical reports confirming that Finn’s upcoming heart surgery was a complete, miraculous success. The nine-year-old boy now spent his afternoons swimming in the heated pool, building complex Lego cities with Dante, and learning chess from a stepfather who treated him with a quiet, unwavering pride.
As for Mave, she no longer wore worn-out flats with heels rubbed down to nothing. But she still baked every Sunday morning in the estate's massive professional kitchen, flour dusting her nose as she laughed with Mrs. Gallo, refusing to let go of the simple, honest joy of making things with her own hands.
Rafe watched her from the kitchen doorway one sunny Sunday afternoon, holding a mug of black coffee, a soft smile playing on his lips as Finn ran past him shouting about a missing Lego piece.

He had spent his whole life building an empire of steel, blood, and fear, believing that power was the only shield worth having. But looking at Mave laughing as she wiped flour from Finn’s cheek, he finally understood the truth.
The greatest empire in the world wasn't the one you conquered. It was the one you protected.
