Chapter 8 - The True Forty Years

December arrived with crisp blue skies and the scent of roasted chestnuts in the city plazas.

My department head called me into her office on a Friday afternoon. After three years of intensive review, my monograph on twentieth-century Mexican lyrical poetry had been approved for publication by the university press, accompanied by an official promotion to full professor with permanent tenure.

When I walked out of the faculty building that afternoon, the world felt vast, bright, and utterly mine.

I drove straight to my father’s garden apartment.

He was in the courtyard, wearing an old canvas apron, sanding down a piece of reclaimed cedar. When he saw me walking through the iron gate with a bottle of sparkling apple cider and a box of pastries from his favorite bakery in Santa Tere, he wiped his dusty hands on a rag and smiled.

"You got the tenure," he said simply.

"How did you know?"

"Because you look like you did when you won the spelling bee in sixth grade," he laughed, pulling off his apron. "Like someone who just realized nobody can take her prize away."

We sat in his small courtyard under the shade of a lemon tree. We drank the cold cider from simple glass tumblers, eating almond pastries while the church bells of San Bernardo chimed five o’clock in the distance.

"I want to do something," Tomás said, reaching into his pocket and pulling out an envelope.

"What is that?"

"I didn't get to celebrate my anniversary," he said quietly. "Not properly. For forty years, I thought marriage was about enduring whatever the other person demanded of you. I thought being a father was about staying quiet so the women in the house wouldn't fight."

He handed me the envelope.

Inside was a receipt from the municipal restoration archive.

"What did you restore?" I asked.

"Come inside," he said.

I followed him into his small living room.
