Chapter 5 - Morning Light and Empty Rooms

The morning sun filtered lazily through the sheer curtains of the master bedroom, casting warm amber patterns across the hardwood floor.

Ricardo Mendoza stretched luxuriously, a smug, satisfied smile plastered across his face. It had been the greatest weekend of his life. Daniela had delivered a healthy, robust baby boy—his son, his precious heir—late last night. His mother, Elvira, had wept tears of pure joy over the phone when he whispered the news to her from the hospital corridor.

And best of all? Everything had gone according to plan. Mariana had stayed glued to the hospital room, completely oblivious while he built his secret family right under her nose.

Ricardo swung his legs out of bed, humming a cheerful tune. He felt invincible. He was a successful developer, a patriarch with a newborn son, and a master manipulator who had managed to have it all.

He walked downstairs, expecting to smell fresh coffee brewing and perhaps find Mariana rushing around the kitchen preparing breakfast before her shift back at the hospital.

Instead, the kitchen was pitch black and deathly cold.

“Mariana?” Ricardo called out, tossing his silk bathrobe tighter around his waist.

Silence.

He walked into the kitchen, flipping on the overhead lights. The counters were completely bare. No coffee maker, no fruit bowl, no mail.

Frowning, Ricardo stepped closer to the stainless-steel refrigerator. Across the front glass panel, written in bold, smeared red lipstick, was a message:

“Enjoy your new beginning, Ricardo. Don't look for me—or your money.”

Ricardo’s breath caught in his throat. A cold prickle of panic raced down his spine.

“What is this sick joke?” he muttered, shaking his head in denial.

He pulled out his phone, dialing Mariana’s number.

“The subscriber you have dialed is no longer in service or has blocked your number.”

“Damn it!” Ricardo cursed, his hands shaking as he dialed again. Same automated message.

Panic setting in rapidly, Ricardo rushed toward the home office. He threw open the bottom drawer of his mahogany desk where he kept his private financial files—specifically, the certificates and access records for the 7 million pesos inheritance fund that he had secretly planned to leverage as collateral for a massive commercial real estate acquisition next week.

He yanked the folder open.

It was completely empty. Not a single sheet of paper remained.

Ricardo’s face drained of every drop of color. He slammed his fist down onto the desk, his voice cracking in absolute terror.

“No... no, no, no! Where is it? Where are the files?!”

He grabbed his laptop, slammed the keyboard open, and logged into the joint financial portal he thought he had access to. The screen flashed red:

“ACCESS DENIED. ACCOUNT CLOSED.”

He pulled up the corporate banking app linked to his personal accounts. The balance was sitting at a paltry 45,000 pesos—barely enough to cover his credit card bills for the month. His main capital, the 7 million pesos inheritance that he had secretly been eyeing to fund his new life with Daniela and their newborn son, had vanished into thin air.

Before Ricardo could even process the financial ruin crashing down around him, the front doorbell rang.

Ding-dong.

Stunned, his legs feeling like lead, Ricardo walked out to the foyer and pulled open the front door.

Standing on the porch was a tall, immaculately dressed man holding a leather briefcase, accompanied by two men in dark suits and a stern-looking woman holding a clipboard.

“Are you Ricardo Mendoza?” the lead man asked, flashing a legal ID badge.

“Yes... yes, I am. Who the hell are you?” Ricardo stammered, his heart hammering against his ribs.

“I am Attorney Marcus Vance, representing the new legal trustee of this property,” the lawyer said smoothly, stepping past Ricardo uninvited into the foyer. “Furthermore, I have here an eviction notice, an asset freeze injunction, and a formal summons for divorce proceedings filed by Mrs. Mariana Salgado.”

Ricardo staggered backward, bumping into the foyer table.

“Eviction? Divorce? What are you talking about? This is my house! Well... our house!” Ricardo shouted, his voice cracking with hysteria.

Attorney Vance offered a cold, pitying smile.

“Your wife executed a legal transfer of this property into an irrevocable trust yesterday afternoon, Mr. Mendoza. And as of 8:00 AM this morning, this property was sold in an all-cash transaction to a corporate investment firm. The new owners require vacant possession by tomorrow morning.”

Vance stepped closer, lowering his voice.

“And as for your funds? Let’s just say Mrs. Mendoza was remarkably thorough. Every cent of her pre-marital assets and inheritance has been legally secured beyond your reach. You are, as the legal term goes, starting over.”

The front door remained wide open, letting in the bright, cold morning wind. Ricardo sank slowly to his knees on the hardwood floor of the foyer, staring blankly at the empty hallway.

The master manipulator had finally won his prize—a newborn son, a secret mistress, and a family legacy. But as he sat alone in the echoing, empty shell of a house that was no longer his, Ricardo finally realized the true cost of his betrayal:

He had won everything, and he had been left with absolutely nothing.
