Chapter 3 - The Message in the Nursery

The private family wing on the second floor of the Mercer mansion was usually a place of quiet refuge—sunlit hallways, framed family photographs, and the soft patter of a child’s footsteps. Today, however, it felt like a crime scene.

Detective Sergeant Miller of the Newport Police Department—who had been quietly retained by Dominic on a private retainer to investigate security vulnerabilities within the estate—stood by the open door of Noah’s bedroom with a pair of latex gloves already snapped onto her hands.

Dominic strode down the hallway, his boots hitting the runner with heavy, measured steps. Emma followed closely behind.

“What happened, Miller?” Dominic demanded as he reached the threshold.

Miller stepped aside, gesturing toward the interior of the sun-drenched nursery. The room was colorful, filled with wooden blocks, dinosaur posters, and a small easel with half-finished watercolor paintings. But right in the center of Noah’s pristine white duvet, someone had pinned a thick, heavy sheet of cream-colored stationery with a silver dagger letter opener.

Dominic walked into the room, his eyes locking onto the paper.

Scrawled across the heavy cardstock in thick, black marker were six words:

Pack your bags or he pays.

Emma gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. “My God… who could have gotten in here? The security logs show—”

“The security logs were overridden from a secondary terminal in the east wing at 1:15 PM,” Miller said, her voice crisp and professional as she pulled a digital tablet from her coat pocket. “Using an administrator override code that has only two authorized holders in the entire household: Dominic Mercer… and Brooke Harrington.”

The air in the nursery seemed to drop twenty degrees.

Dominic didn't speak. He reached out, his gloved hand lifting the silver dagger from the duvet, and examined the stationery. It wasn't standard office paper; it was heavy, imported linen stock embossed with a subtle watermark—the same stationery used exclusively in the private law offices of Arthur Harrington, Brooke’s older brother.

“Where is Noah right now?” Dominic asked, his voice dropping into a register so cold it felt like shattered glass.

“Downstairs in the secure family rec room with Natalie and a trusted security detail,” Miller replied instantly. “They are completely safe, Dominic. No one is getting near that boy.”

Dominic turned slowly, walking back out into the hallway just as Brooke hurried up the grand staircase, her breath coming in short, panicked gasps.

“Dominic! What’s happening? I heard shouting—” Brooke stopped dead in her tracks as she saw Miller standing in the doorway of the nursery, holding the threatening note.

Brooke’s eyes widened with theatrical horror. “Oh, my God! Is that… is that Noah’s room? What happened? Was there a break-in?”

Dominic walked toward her, his footsteps deliberate, stopping just inches away. He held up the heavy linen stationery between two fingers.

“Recognize the paper, Brooke?” he asked quietly.

Brooke blinked, her expression a masterpiece of confusion and innocence. “Paper? What paper? Dominic, how should I know? You think I had something to do with a break-in in a child’s bedroom? Are you insane?”

“The override code used to disable the hallway cameras at 1:15 PM was logged from your private tablet in the west wing study,” Dominic stated flatly, his dark eyes boring straight into her soul.

Brooke’s breath hitched, but she recovered with blistering speed, her voice rising in righteous indignation. “Anyone can pick up a tablet! Anyone on your domestic staff could have accessed my study while I was downstairs with the wedding coordinator! You’re framing me! Because you want an excuse to protect your sister and get out of this wedding!”

She reached out, grabbing his forearm with trembling, manicured fingers, tears spilling over her eyelashes with terrifying cinematic precision.

“Dominic, look at me. Please. Do you really think I would terrorize a nine-year-old child? I love you! I’ve dedicated the last six months of my life to building a future with you!”

For a second—just one fleeting, agonizing second—any outside observer watching the scene would have sworn she was innocent. She was trembling, sobbing, looking up at him with eyes full of absolute, heartbroken devotion.

Emma watched from the hallway, holding her breath, wondering if Dominic would fall for it.

Dominic looked down at her face. He reached out with his free hand, gently lifting her chin so she was forced to look directly into his eyes.

“You’re an exceptional actress, Brooke,” Dominic whispered, his voice smooth as silk. “Arthur trained you well.”

Brooke’s tears stopped instantly. The softness vanished from her face, replaced by a flash of stark, primal terror.

“What… what did you say?” she whispered.

“I said,” Dominic replied, his voice dropping into a tone of absolute finality, “that your brother Arthur’s Providence shipping empire went into bankruptcy liquidation eighteen months ago. And the offshore accounts you and he set up to funnel my corporate assets after Saturday morning have already been frozen by my Swiss legal team.”

Brooke staggered backward as if she had been struck across the face with a lead pipe. Her mouth opened, but no sound came out.

“You… you knew?” she choked out, her voice losing its polished veneer entirely.

“I knew before my private jet even touched down on the tarmac this morning,” Dominic said, turning his back on her as he handed the evidence bag to Detective Miller. “Miller, escort Miss Harrington to the master suite. She is not to leave the room, she is not to use her phone, and she is not to contact her brother under any circumstances. If she tries to step foot outside that door, place her under formal arrest for extortion and breaking and entering.”

“No! You can’t do this!” Brooke screamed, lunging forward, but two private security guards materialized out of the shadows of the hallway, gently but firmly blocking her path. “Dominic! You can’t do this to me! The wedding is in four days! The press is coming! Every major family in Boston will know!”

“Let them talk,” Dominic said without even turning around as he walked down the corridor toward the stairs. “Because by the time Saturday morning arrives, there won't be a wedding to attend. There will only be a federal indictment.”
