Chapter 8 - The Gala at the Met

Three weeks later, an elegant, custom-tailored garment bag arrived at Dora's office, delivered directly by a high-end Fifth Avenue boutique. Inside hung a breathtaking emerald-green silk evening gown—simple, elegant, and perfectly fitted to her measurements, accompanied by a handwritten note in Victor's sharp, decisive handwriting:

The annual Metropolitan Museum charity gala is tonight. You are my guest of honor. Wear green.

Dora stared at the dress, her heart doing a strange, fluttering flip. It was one thing to be his employee; it was entirely another to step back into the lion's den of Manhattan high society—this time, not as a disposable waitress holding a tray of prosecco, but as Victor Sterling's acknowledged equal.

When the evening arrived, Dora stood before the full-length mirror in her suite. The silk gown hugged her curves gracefully, falling in a fluid waterfall of emerald fabric to the floor. Her dark hair was swept up into an intricate, elegant twist by a personal stylist Victor had hired, and her mother's silver locket rested against the hollow of her throat.

When she walked up the grand staircase into the penthouse, Victor was waiting by the floor-to-ceiling windows, holding a glass of champagne. He turned as she approached, and for a fleeting second, the terrifying, untouchable crime lord looked entirely breathless.

"Dora," Victor said softly, setting his glass down. He walked toward her, his gaze sweeping over her with an expression of profound, unfiltered admiration. "You take my breath away."

"Thank you, Victor," she whispered, feeling a warm flush spread across her cheeks. "Though I have to admit... walking into a museum full of billionaires in a dress that costs more than my old car is making my palms sweat."

"Let them sweat," Victor smiled, offering his arm. "Tonight, no one in that room will dare look at you twice—unless it's with the respect you've always deserved."

When their sleek black car pulled up to the grand stone steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, camera flashes exploded like lightning storms against the tinted glass. Flashbulbs popped continuously as the door opened and Victor stepped out first, extending his hand to help Dora down.

The moment Dora's silver-heeled shoe touched the red carpet, a collective murmur rippled through the gathered paparazzi and society reporters.

“Who is that?” “Is that Victor Sterling’s date?” “I’ve never seen her before—she’s stunning...”

Flashbulbs illuminated the emerald silk of her gown and the quiet, unshakeable confidence in her posture. There was no shrinking away, no hiding behind pillars, no fear of spilled drinks or sneering socialites. She walked beside Victor with her head held high, a queen entering her own domain.
